I'm about to buy my second handgun.  An XD model.  I'm having trouble making up my mind as to which caliber I want.  I already have a colt 45. and buying an XD45 would save on some ammo.  However I've never shot a .40 and I've heard very good things about them.  So help me out here.  Which one should I get.  The XD40 or XD45?

That's a tough call--meaning I wouldn't know what to do without comparing the two side-by-side.  I'm a 1911 enthusiast.  While attending a funshow at Chantilly several months ago with my wife, she wound up buying the .40 XD.  In comparrison, the .40 XD had a slightly less recoil than my 1911, and I enjoyed shooting her pistol before she told me to go back to my spot on the range!

If it's any help, the ergonomics of the XD is great (~5" barrel), and if there wasn't one in the house, I would probably get one...in .45.

What can I say?  I'm just a .45 kinda' guy!

Honestly, if you want an XD, I don't believe you'll be dissapointed regardless of caliber.

Best,

Ed

I don't have experience with the XD40, but I do with the .45.
It is definately awesome. Recoil is not bad, follow up shots are easy to pull off.
I highly recommend the 4" .45 model. Even though the mags are double-stacked, it still fits very comfortably in my hands. And who can complain about the capacity?

Easy choice - 45.  Go big.

I shot both before buying.  I liked the .45 better, so that's what I bought.

I have both, but like the .45's (service and tactical) better, except for the longer grip frame than the .40.  Main reason I like them better - they hold one more boolit than the .40's.

If not the .45, look at the XD 9 IMO.

the .45's are nice but let me hit you with this option, if you go with the .40 you can get three guns in one. by replacing the barrels you can get .357 and 9mm in the same frame. i have two xd .40's and i love em.
