If you are talking about just shooting... nothing beats the 5 inch Gov. Now if you are talking carry, you can't beat the Commander. 4.25 barrel keeps the fps at a number where hollowpoints will do their job, points easy. The shorter slide doesn't save much on weight, but for me, I can sure hide it better and be comfortable too. The only thing better for carry is the Colt CCO type 1911, officer grip with a commander slide.

5" works best, it's what John Browning designed anything different is a compromise.

5" perfect.

For IWB, field holsters, or competition, I see no advantage with the less than 5" guns. Some like them though.

The 5"1911 and the .45ACP are the PERFECT marriage.

In true ARFCOM style, get both.

Yeah, 5" is perfect. Although, with a proper grip and properly functioning pistol, 3"ers are sweet too (talk about HIDDEN).

The only mistake ever made with the design of the 1911 was the size. Four inches was what the 1911 Gods really intended.
Seriously, I love the balance of the 4" gun. It just feels perfect in my hand. Five is fine, it just doens't balance right for me.

5" w/ extended dust cover. - The Monolith HW. Although being heavy, it has great balance.

"Go 5" chrome, or go home!"

I own 3" and 5" gun, I prefer the smaller...
