For serious use? An OA-98.

Seriously, a springfield XD should go good with it. www.springfield-armory.com/prod-xdpstl-service.shtml

The one you are most proficent with!

I like either the M1911 which I'm carrying now or the M9 Beretta (92FS) which I carry when doing PT here in the sandbox.  They both backups to my M4.

I like how he thinks.

First is mag compatibility.
Second is one of the very best handguns out there today!

ARndog, you are the winner here!

Pick up a glock 17 or 19. Point it at something. Look at the pistol and sights. Is it pointed where you thought? If it is, buy both. If not, start over. Pick up a commander. POINT IT AT....

I'd like to make a observation about sidearms for us ARFCOMers.  If you calculated the approx weight in grains of your ammo in the AR vs in the sidearm, if you were to carry a .45 1911 with 230 gr loads, and your AR has M193s, you would be carrying more lead, per mag, in the 1911 than in the AR, even though the 1911's capacity is 8 vs the AR at 30.  Just some random thoughts.

But it is comforting to me to have a sidearm that can launch as much lead as the AR, even if it is big, slow, pokey 0.45" slugs

You pick one of these, and you'll be fine.  But your target's f*cked.
