Probably an "S" and not a "5" in the SN.  By the book that dates it to 1957 or 58.  But a Model 28-2 would have been 1961 or later.  Curious.

It's an N prefix gun. He posted a couple of threads in other forums. I think he may have found himself a very rare variation(I looked it up in the Standard Catalog) since it has a red ramp, but of course that could have been done after it left the factory.

N prefix makes more sense.  1978.

Red ramp was made for New York State Police, in roughly that SN range.  I would guess this is a contract over run.

It is an N prefix. I am going to send for a factory letter on it.

The NYSP guns started later in the serial range. 540xxx or thereabouts.

Nice looking gun. I'd be interested to see what Roy said about the red ramp front sight.

I likes me some Model 28s.

I had one in the mid 80's and the one I had was indeed marked NYSP. I regret sselling many guns over the years but none as much as that one. Damn good find and at a decent price in todays looney S&W market. Congratulations!
