I recently sold a pistol, and I've got a little bit of cash.

Looking hard at the Glock 19.

Seems real nice, Have not shot one yet.

What do I need to know? Or just shut up and take the plunge

Edited to Ask: Gen 3 or Gen 4?

Any day one modifications? I know glocks are popular, but I had no idea some of the lengths people go to.

I've you've got no problem with stiff triggers, and the grip angle works for you than there's no reason not to get it.

Get the Gen 3. Proven design, Gen 4 is not proven and there have been problems with other Gen 4 9mm Glocks. The 19s are the perfect compromise between concealability, capacity, and the feel of a full frame handgun in your hands. You will not regret it.

Get it.  I just turned 21 a few weeks ago and bought a Gen 3 G19 and I love it.  I also asked here whether I should wait for the Gen 4s, about 80% of the respondents voted Gen 3.  Sorry, I can't find the thread.

Just shut up and get it.

Glock ergonomics aren't anything to write home about.  The trigger takes some getting used to(its not bad, just different).

Honestly its just like a good, solid truck.  It just works, all the time, every time.

1) Get a Gen 3
2) Unless you have GIANT hands, (2xl mechanix gloves), get the G19.  If you have ginormous hands, look into the G17
3) Replace the stock plastic sights with metal sights - I prefer XS Big dots - others hate them - meh.
4) Keep the rest STOCK
5) Shoot it A LOT
6) Replace the recoil spring assembly every 5,000 rounds.

Enjoy.

i'm not real crazy about the gen4 yet, maybe it will grow on me, but my vote goes for the gen3 G19. i own one, it's my CCW, and i simply love it. i'm sure you'll be happy with it too.

here's a little tease:

Go rent one at a range, you'll like it. get a good high grip and practice with the trigger then you'll be shooting one hole in no time. its the ideal carry gun,no external safeties to mess with......no DA/SA changeup, cheap mags and parts. you cant beat the 19

Buy it.

Its the best 9mm ever created IMO.

It is about the most perfect 9mm pistol out there.....I had one during my first "Glock go Round".....but sold all my glocks about 10 years ago.

I have become a glock fan again and so far have a 35 (with a LW 9mm conversion barrel), a 21 and a advantage arms conversion for my 35 as well.

Next on my list are a 19 and a 26........

My fear is when I get the 19, I won't shoot my 35 anymore....haha.

P.S. Glock 21 is what I consider the most perfect .45 (and I have only had it for a short period of time.....have owned at least 6 1911s back in the day, a couple USPs in .45)

So.....BUY IT NOW!

The G19 is my favorite out of the 5 Glocks I've owned.  It's the one I shoot the most.  I like it so much I want a 2nd one.  The above posters covered everything well.

Get it.  Its a good gun that serves several roles well.  Its size lends itself to concealed carry, home defense, practical shooting sports and recreational shooting/plinking.  I would kind of say its the automatic equivalent to the S&W K frame.

Mags holsters parts are plentiful. They are proven to be shooters and reliable. They are the perfect size to conceal while still being big enough to eadily shoot.

I've got 2 and want to add to more

IF you find you shoot it well and have no problems with the grip angle etc. it's a great choice.

I'd say it's about the perfect balance of size, capacity, caliber and operation for a general purpose 9mm (and I say that in spite of NOT being a Glock guy myself).

Shoot one first though, you may find that there are other guns that point and handle better for you.

I'd recommend that at a minimum you look at an M&P9c as well.

Every shooter is different so it's difficult for me to tell someone to get one handgun over another.

However, the G19 is a good firearm.  I was a hardcore HK enthusiast (still am) and really frowned upon Glocks until I bought a gen 3 G19 last year and now I shoot it more than anything else in my collection.  In fact, I also picked up a G19 RTF and G22 RTF this year.

I'd suggest you find a range that rents handguns and shoot the G19 and decide for yourself.  Best of luck.

Thanks for the info all, I have shot an older (gen 1 maybe?) g17, so I'm not completely averse to them. I just haven't had a whole lot of trigger time behind one.

Right now, I still shoot my usp9 exclusively, and at the risk of being burned at the stake, got rid of my 1911 cause I just didn't like it.

I saw one for sale locally for $475, lightly used. May take the plunge later.

Yada yada yada,....Gen3 owners gotta bad mouth the Gen4......it's a beautiful gun.  You lefties can even switch the mag release over now.  I installed the medium backstrap insert and she fits me perfect.  Buy it and don't look back.

Let me start off by saying that I a not a Glock fan.  i have fired a 26, 17 and 21, but they are not for me.  I bought  my older daughter a 19 RTF w/night sights, had the 3.5# connector installed, and the smith gave me a free extended slide release.  She hasn't had a chance to shoot it yet, and I will not shoot it before she does.  I have to confess that I am looking for a reason to buy myself one.  I have large hands, but the 19 still feels good.

My vote is for a G26.   Smal enough for CCW, I pocket carry it.  If you get the +2 mag extensions, you'll have 12+1 capacity in a pocket sized pistol.   Makes me smile!   YMMV

Just bought a gen 4 19.  I debated gen 3 vs. gen 4, could not find any major reason to pick one over the other.  I'm right handed and had no problem with the older mag release.  In right-handed configuration the gen 4 will take old or new mags.  I chose the medium grip strap, which puts it pretty close the same grip size as gen 3.  Supposedly the new recoil spring has some benefit, but at best it will be minor.  It's still a Glock - if you didn't like the gen 3, you aren't likely to fall in love with the gen 4.  Gen 4 comes with three mags, but the price is likely to be higher by at least the cost of one mag.  All in all I'm happy with the gen 4.

I have a gen 2 17, and a gen 3 26.  As Goldilocks would say, the 19 is "just right".

My different take.  I bought a used Glock 19 about 20 years ago.  Shot it lots.   I do not even know how many rounds I've fired with it.
PO had put a big ass blade up front.  Well I made the mistake of taking it off....the jerk had drilled a big ass hole in the slide for a double stake site.

Upshot, sent it back to Glock to replace the slide. Got it back today.  Its brand new except for barrel and grip.
My 4 mags they also simply replaced with new ones.  The Glock folks are very nice and helpful (but they do need to implement email to the Tech group).

Cannot wait to get to the range this weekend.

my glock 22 is pushing 19 years old. it was made when i was 8 or 9! i have pushed it hard and it keeps on going, not one hang up. i like other handguns for sure, 1911s. sigs and the like. but if SHTF im going to my Glock. she works all the time every time. im a sucker for all things utilitarian. now i want a 23 its the perfect size.

For $475 it should be new.  I wouldn't pay that for a used Glock.

First of all, make sure that it agrees with your hand. It doesn't have to be perfect, but at least make sure it doesn't irritate or annoy. I have a Glock 19, and shooting it was irritating at first. After 500 rounds at the range, I had the grip pattern engraved on my palm and a blister on my trigger finger where the trigger safety is. Dry fire will solve the blister, as I now have a callous there.

I sold an M&P to finance the Glock (well, it was actually to pay tuition, and I made up the money later). I regret selling the M&P, but at the same time, the Glock has really grown on me, and I appreciate the extremely solid reputation that 9mm Glocks have obtained. I don't think I'll ever be selling the 19.

That said, the Glock 17 or 34 may be more comfortable to you. In that case, I'd get a full size or tactical-practical model, and get a Glock 26 to go along with it.

Just remember, as long as you're comfortable with the weapon itself, any decision that you make will be the correct decision. It's a good feeling to know you can't mess up!

Great pistol.  A Beretta 92FS, for example, gives you the same capacity and caliber, but in a bigger and heavier weapon.  Same goes for SIG's and many other 9mm handguns.

The only change I made to my Glock 19 is installing a Lone Wolf 3.5# connector.

+1 on Gen 3. They're proven and they work. There are still stories out there about the gen 4 9mm not quite running right. But then I am not a beta-tester type of guy. Would rather just stick with what works.

First day mods––night sights or steel sights of some kind ($50-$100). Grip tape (sand type-$11). Then factory glock extended slide release ($10) and larry vickers mag release ($15). Both are a tiny bit bigger than the stock ones, but far easier to use.

Then you're GTG indefinitely. Maybe a recoil spring at 10 or 20k rounds.

On the subject of the compensated model:

The recoil on the Glock 19 that I have is very manageable. Negligible even with NATO spec. I also don't like the added likelihood of debris getting into the barrel. But you'll have to see for yourself if it's worth it.
