Anyone here have a special summer carry?  It is shorts and flip flop weather here, so I have been carrying my g19 in a backpack, instead of on me.  Thinking about either getting a better holster, or getting a pistol with a slightly lower profile.

What does everyone carry during the hot months?

Instead of carrying the G19 in a backpack, i recommend a smaller pistol on your waist and accessible.

By the time you react and draw from your backpack it may be too late.

A compact 9mm can do the Jo:
PPS, Kahr PM9 etc

Or even a .380 with some buffalo bore hardcast bullets (mmm P238 or bodyguard).

The key is 1) carrying it 2) having it quickly accessible  3) Train

Good luck

oh and carry rigs:
1) Belly Bands
2) Thin IWB holster with Belt (Works great with cargos)
3) The infamous fanny pack

Just some ideas.

If I absolutely can't carry the G19, this is what I go to.

why the gloves may i ask?  you an EMT or something?

i carry my glock or XD IWB still.  either a baggy tshirt or a short sleeve button up.  carrying in your backpack does no good.  if you cannot find a way to carry a full size on your person in the summer, think about a LCP or something for pocket carry.

a j frame, kel tec or similar small pocket gun would be better than a g19 in a backpack.  I will go with a jframe in the summer sometimes, not my first choice but better than nothing.

I carry a PPS in shorts/tshirt all the time IWB.  It works pretty well.  I still get worried that it will print or I'll bend over and it will be shown, but according to friends who didn't know I was carrying they would have never had a clue.

Its a little big to put in a cargo/front pocket though. I wouldn't mind finding something even smaller for the really hot summer months that can go in a pocket.

I carry a 5in 1911 with a TLR-1 attached, OWB. I wear a under armor heat gear shirt as a under shirt, so the gun isn't touching my skin. and most days I wear Columbia shirts. either their fishing shirts or their polo style fishing shirts. they are cool, breath able and are meant to be worn untucked. what you wear down below makes no difference. I wear shorts and flip flops too. I keep boat shoes in the truck so If I need to see a client I can put them on. Just because its hot out doesn't mean you have to carry a smaller gun. I would love to see some of you run these small guns in a class and be proficient with them. non the less deploy them in a life and death situation and be affective. it is upper 90's here with a humidity of 95%, it doesnt get much hotter than that.

Just keep in mind that others have different concerns than you.
For instance... Shorts, fishing shirt, and boat shoes?  For clients?  You don't really believe everyone is living that dream do you?  Your tone even suggests that others are stupid if they aren't.

The smart carry is a great way to carry a full size gun with no one being the wiser.  And it most certainly can be deployed, shirt tucked in or not, as fast as an IWB with the shirt tucked in.

I have qualified with my PPS on the same course that I have my duty gun and shoot it with almost the exact same proficiency.

The majority of the time I could easily carry a full-sized pistol, but I don't.  It's a matter of choice.  I know that 90% of CC shootings occur from 5-7ft and use 3-5 rounds.  Sure, I'd like to be prepared for a fucking firefight every single time I go to buy groceries but I know that's not feasible or reasonable.

Most people think I over do it because I carry 99% of the time I am off-duty.  The 1% of the time that I don't carry is usually in those strange circumstances where carrying IWB or OWB would just be pointless and I can confirm that the risk of incident is near zero.  Those are the times that an even smaller gun would be nice to have.  If nothing else for my peace of mind.

There is nothing wrong with running a small pistol.  And I understand where you are coming from and hope that everyone that carries the smaller CC guns puts as much if not more trigger time into becoming comfortable with them than their full-sized guns.

But with that being said there ARE advantages to carrying a smaller concealed gun.

I thought I was going to have to go to a pocket pistol or J frame for the summer. Turns out I can carry my EDC gun (Ruger SR9C in a Kholster) just fine. With shorts that have no belt loops (swim trunks) I just wear the belt underneath and clip to holster to that as well as the waistband. Its working so far.

I carry an LCP in a Desantis Nemesis pocket holster. For me, this was the best solutions as my XD tended to be in my truck more often than not.  YMMV, of course.

Because I have first responder training from when I was in the police academy and I don't want people's heebie jeebies if I come up on an accident scene. They weigh an ounce or something and I put them in a cargo pocket and forget about em.

I often do this in the summer with a J-frame. Simple, super easy, and nobody knows.

The belt is less important since the gun is fairly light and no holster. A belt or drawstring that stays tight is the most important thing.

This is a pretty common question. I admit, I am a bit fickle. One the one hand I say “carrying a gun is a lifestyle change, dress around the gun and deal with it”. Then on the other I say “any gun is better than no gun”. There are also times when a t-shirt would sure be nice to wear but I end up wearing a button up for concealment. For me, a t-shirt never works as well as a button up because I don’t like wearing oversized t-shirts and though some seem to defy the laws of concealment but swearing their tight shirt conceals well, it doesn’t work that well for me.

My primary carry gun is a G19. For a while I got in the habit of carrying my 26 instead for size and weight savings. And yes I’m one of those that preached the G19 and 26 were almost the same size for a long time. The weight is noticeable.

I loathe carrying a J-frame, but do on occasion. The bottom line is you have to decide what works best for you and go with it. And if that means carrying an LCP or something but you WILL carry it, so be it. Better than nothing. I hate to have the “better than nothing” attitude though on that day that I am in a fight for me life. Probably never happen, but it does happen, hence why we carry.

Many of you guys may laugh....but, I picked up a North American Arms Mini Revolver (with the holster grip) from a local gun show this weekend.
I ended up paying $225 out the door for it with tax included.  It's a .22 LR 5 shot revolver with a 1 1/8th in barrel.  When folded up, it looks like a small pocket knife in your pocket and only weighs in at 6.3oz fully loaded.

I know .22LR is not typically a defensive round, but it sure beats carrying a G19 in a galco IWB when it's 95* out in shorts and a t-shirt.  There's no way anyone could possibly spot it on me.

I call it my 'get off me gun' that I borrowed name from Sootch00 on YouTube.

As most say....any gun is better than no gun at all.   I find myself carrying 100% of the time now, even if its walking a block down the road to the ATM.

For me, the larger pistol issue is one of weight when wearing really light clothing.  One poster mentioned OWB and this is actually a very comfortable option in the heat.  Just use a light undergarment or underarmor shirt, wife beater, whatever and a cool (temperature wise) cover shirt.  Carrying a full mag opposite side helps balance it all with a good belt.  I carry my G19 like that at times.

If you have to dress up at work you are already dealing with a certain amount of discomfort in the heat so something like a Supertuck or MTAC would carry a heavier gun well and lots of folks post about little to no irritation without under garments.  A light wifebeater or underarmor isn't too hot if you are already dressed up and need the protection.

As far as pocket pistols, they aren't optimum based on current training and deployment teaching that most folks offer, but they have been carried for years and used effectively when needed.  You have to be aware of the limitations of the gun and the rounds, as well as the need for practice in deploying it.

As far as training courses, there are some companies that will offer training on pocket guns, mouseguns, etc.  You can do alot to improve your odds by just practicing deploying your pocket pistol and by firing it at realistic ranges and making sure it will run when you need it.
While a .38 special J-frame might be the minimum in some eyes, a .380 LCP, for example,  that runs reliably can have 7 rounds available and a quick 6 round reload on hand just as fast as any 5 shot .38 deployed and reloaded from the same pockets in your shorts.

I just switched over from a Glock 26 to a Ruger LC9 for summertime. I ordered a Desantis Nemesis for it and will carry in a cargo pocket of my shorts. Also plan to order a Comptac Infidel for iwb carry. Holds 7+1 of 9mm and with a extra mag, gives me 15 rounds of +p hollowpoints available. I am good with that.....

I am in the same league with the guy carrying the 5" 1911 even in the summer, I normally wear, (in the summer) shorts and a baggy t-shirt or a 5.11 shirt meant to conceal, or a loose fitting polo shirt.  I carry my 5" Kimber in an IWB Crossbreed holster though, and also wear a moisture wicking undershirt so my pistols grip isn't up against my skin. I'm not saying this is the way everyone should do it, but it works for me. I am not really all too concerned about my shirt imprinting my pistol either, but I would like to avoid being asked about it all the same.  I am a Police Sergeant so I always have my badge with me as well, and normally, (except for Sundays at church), have it clipped to my belt right beside of my firearm.  Hope this helps.

My usual carry is a Glock 19 in a BladeTech IWB. I work outside all day everyday and because of the chemicals we use I have to wear long pants, long sleeve shirts, boots, and when using the chemicals, those green nitrile gloves. While the Glock has been just fine for the past couple years, this year I am trying something else. Last week I picked up a Ruger LCP and am currently trying that out in a pocket holster, and I have to tell you it's nice. I know it's just a .380 and I will carry my Glock everyday that I can but for days like today and how tomorrow is going to be(95 degrees, high humidity, and heat index of over 100), this little LCP is a nice change.

I don't advocate drastically changing how/what you carry just because of weather but if you do, just make sure you remember what you are carrying and train with each system.

For the past five years I have been carrying a G32 OWB in a pancake holster. I never liked the ankle holsters. Never was allowed to carry anything more than a Glock (dept rules) and didn't have the money at the time to purchase a baby Glock. I t wasn't much of a problem in winter here, but in the summer I always had to dress around the weapon. Now I have the opportunity to carry something other than a Glock and I am leaning towards a .380 (preferably the sig) or an Airlight for the summer carry. I will still carry the G32 in winter or when I am not going out in shorts and a T-shirt.

Agree. Find a way to have it accessible. You won't make the G19 work with a tight tee shirt. Only option is a short sleeve buttom up or a small gun. In summer, you need to dress around the gun depending on your fashion preferences and body type. The G26 could fit that bill BUT you still cannot wear a tight tee shirt AND you'll need wear shorts that will take a good belt. And, you still have your spare mag to work in. I find a short sleeve buttom up the realistic option, or a DARK oversized heavy cotton tee shirt.

Nice to see you've seen the light.  There's a significant difference, not only in concealment (depending on where you carry), but also in  versatility and comfort, between a G19 and a G26.

And the icing on the cake, at least for me, is with the GAP magazine floorplate the G26 is not only more comfortable to shoot, but I shoot it better than my G19.
