I ditched both my Glock and HK .40s and now have three XDs in this caliber.  Your needs and opinions may vary.

for me, it would boil down to price and trigger

the HK is a tad more (for gun and mags) and the stock trigger is so-so, expecially in DA

XD' grip safety is a factor as its consistant, but could-be-improved trigger

cant really compare a da/sa to a striker.  if you prefer a da/sa get the hk.  if the striker the sa.  the sa is the only striker id buy.  personally id get a .45, hk or 1911.

Glock and H&K in that order. Other than that.....Springfield XD's are junk, their finish is nothing compared to either Glock or HK

How is the XD not built as well as the HK?

The finish on an XD kinda sucks. Other then that, they are great.

It's possible those of us who like H&Ks enjoy paying ridiculous prices for sub-par weapons.

It's also possible we know something other people don't.

Anything's possible.

I had a 9MM USP and would take my BiTone XD over it any day of the week. Not that my XD is more reliable because they both ran 100% for me but I shoot better with my XD and it was more comfortable to me. What works for one person in a pistol may not work for another one. At least go look at them both and hold them and see how they both feel before you decide if you can not shoot them both first.

You'll want to shoot both before buying.

The USP isn't for everyone.  I have a USPc40 V1, 400rds through it and I still haven't gotten the trigger down.  (FYI, that's two trips to the range for me.)

For any sort of defense I am still using my Para P14.  I know I'll hit 99% closer to where I am aiming compared to the USP.  Just means more range time for the new gun, though.  have
I like the feel and functions of the XD, haven't had a chance to shoot it yet to see how the important part is.

i don't like the usp.  it feels overly muzzle heavy to me.  then again i have only put a couple mags through a couple different models--9mm and .40sw.  i don't like the way glocks sit in my hand.  and i haven't shot an xd.

but if you are looking at the sub $500 price range you need to look at the cz75.  i found that it is about the most comfortable pistol out there.  they come in two basic configurations--decocker and manual safety.  the manual safety version also has a half cock so you can thumb down the hammer and have a da first shot.  the decocker drops the hammer to the same half cock notch.  i love my 9mm compact decocker.

if you are going to get rid of the ruger let me know cause i love my 95 and wouldn't mind getting it a brother if the price is right.

I will be the first to chime in to get a Sig 229  Get a Certified Pre Owned Sig for $500.  I traded in my Ruger P94 for the Sig and have been extremely happy ever since.  Accurate as hell, reliable and concealable.

A big +1 on the Sig or the CZ.  I'm not crazy about the feel of plastic guns, but I love my Sigs and XDs.  My son shoots an XD9 and really loves it.  It is reliable and accurate, but I can't get on board with the feel.  A 229 is a dead sexy, reliable, well-built, and durable gun, and a grade 1 CPO is hard to beat.  I've got several CZs and they have been flawless, and feel natural in the hand.  The CZ grip frame is smaller, if that is a consideration for you.

My new XD45 is a better gun than my USP .45 Tactical ever was.  SA is using a new finish that is similar to Tennifer in tone and durability.  Shoots like a dream and puts 14 rounds of ACP in my hand in a slim package that doesn't feel like a brick.

I thought you were interested in plastic guns only or I would have voted CZ as well. 97B or 75B or P01 or SP01 is what I would get. I just shot my XD with my 97B and my 97B shoots better for me than any pistol I have ever had and my SP01 is the same way with 9mm and the frame on the P01 makes its weigh about rite for a carry pistol.

I would like to here this.  Also,  I did not think there was a finish "similar to Tennifer" that was as good.  I have a USPf .45 and G21.  I have shot and inspected the XD. The one I shot had a fit and finish that was not in the ballpark with HK and Glock. The Glock and HK are in my eyes equal. Both having strong areas.  Mostly the USP is a HI cap. 1911 for the times I want to carry cocked and locked.  The Glock has the edge in capacity and reliability.  I see an XD as a choice only if price is a concern.

Never shot the HK USP.  But I held it at the gunshow.  I could tell it was a high quality gun.

I own an XD9 and love it.  100% reliable, great finish.  I have the bi-tone slide so finish problems aren't a problem.  There's some wear ont he finish of the barrel itself, but I like it.  Nice trigger pull.

Also $458 out the door!  You really need to shoot the HK USP and XD.  I wouldn't be surprised if the XD performs as well as the usp.

Don't let the price fool you, either gun is a high quality gun.

I'd take the XD.

They're (see, someone on this board actually can use the proper spelling) great pistols and well worth a good look. The newer production ones have a better finish than mine too, so don't let their finish horror stories from people that don't like them in the first place scare you off, either.
