i have a chance to purchase one and the guy is asking $500.  It is in excellent condition.  Is this a good price for it?

No, I wouldn't buy for the $400 that it's worth.  Short 44's are a bit of a handfull.

That is a bit high for a used S&W. I collect S&W revolvers and for a used 629 4" with box I think $350-400 is tops depending upon condition.
