I had purchased a S&W 500, black overall finish with a matt silver cylinder and comp. I want to install a scope on this gun. Have been told in the past to use only a Burris scope. Any and all comments welcome.

I'm using a weaver scope with Weigand base and 4 Weigand rings.  Fired about 25 rounds of DT 350-grain hot loads (1975 fps) and it zeroed in perfectly.  Here are my last three shots (two shots, scope adjust, last shot):

Interesting how your scope base mounts to the top of he main frame, mine scope base will mount to the top of the bbl with three allen screws. Not sure if/how that changes scope size?

You might want to check under your rear sight.  It looks like you've got the same rear sight as mine, and if you removed the rear sight on mine, you expose three drilled and tapped holes for a scope base.  Weigand includes three screws with the base, and they went right in.

Even though I have a old, Burris on a 7mm-08 pistol, when I picked up a S&W .460, I put on a Leupold because I've heard stories about bad customer service from Burris, and stellar customer service.

Make sure you put locktite on all the screws!

I have one of the 500 PC Hunters with a 6 1/2" barrel. It is just like the one pictured above, but all brushed stainless. It has a Weaver rail on the barrel shroud and a screw-on rail that allows the scope to be mounted further aft. My setup is a Weaver 2x handgun scope mounted in Warne QD mounts. I mount it directly to the barrel shroud, that way I can quickly remove it and use iron sights. The comp is effective enough to blacken the front scope lens with soot when shooting lead bullets. One important consideration is to Loctite the scope in the mounts. I used the green Loctite and the scope doesn't move.

I have the same Model S&W 500. Mine came with a base that attaches to the barrel with Three screws. I put a 2x-6x bushnell scope on the one I have. I have not used it with the scope yet. It is the Most Accurate handgun I own!

At one time I believe Burris Handgun scopes were the standard by which others were judged, I doubt you could go wrong with a Burris.

Here is a picture of the top of my 500. The scope plate is held in place with three screws provided. I can leave my rear sight attached. I'm suprised as how short the plate is (5 5/16") long. I have heard the same, good and bad, about Burris.

Bottom line is... Not being well of, just a working man, but believe in buying the best first time around. Looking for scope opinions.

Thanks
