Pros and cons of one vs. the other?

I think you'll be happy with either.

RIA is a little cheaper, the STI Spartan is maybe a *little* nicer, but man those slide serrations and roll-marks fell out of the ugly tree. STI will be finished a little better. Both will shoot better than you think. The RIA will look a little more like a traditional 1911.

two different levels of gun.
The RIA Match is the equvilant to the Spartan.
The tactical is one level down.

So it is a production RIA, whereas the Match and Spartan are both hand fitted with match barrels and bushings along with the fiber optic front sight and adjustible rear.

The tactical runs around 480. The Match about 570, the spartan about 630.
If you check whitakers, I got my spartan for 540 about a year ago. Well worth it I think.
You couldn't add the match barrel and sights for the 100 buck difference.
Honestly thought I would not like the sights, but changed my mind after using them.

For a budget 1911, you really can't go wrong with a Taurus.  I love mine.

Friends don't let friends buy Taurus.

Given the choice of the two I'd pick the Spartan but both have excellent reputations and warranty support.  I just prefer STI.

The Spartans I've handled and worked with have had hard fit barrels, which was somewhat surprising considering the gun's price point.   I was expecting something more akin to the "pick some parts out of the bin and throw them in" approach taken by other manufacturers competing for this space.

Very thrilled with my RIA tactical. I think it looks very handsome compared to the billboard roll marks of STI's

I have the RIA and if you can get passed the fact that it's not made in the US, you will be just fine. Mine fired extremeley well right out of the box and I have not had any issues yet other than a few ammo related jams. <––Which were my fualt!!!!

Let me start by saying I'm a 1911 snob.

A friend of mine bought a STI spartan.
I said bring it over and I'll  tune, & adjust the extractor, etc.
I was impressed.
unlike most new 1911's, even higher priced Kimbers, Everything was done.
the extractor was properly tuned and tensioned.
the barrel was very well fitted for a factory gun.

I shoot IPSC with an STI,  and CCW another one.
STI  is a great company with great customer service.

I think the STI spartan is the best deal going for an entry level 1911.

I wouldn't piss on a Taurus if I saw one on fire.

Spartan.  I don't know about RIA custom service but I do know that STI's is top notch!  If your in the competition community you know how much they give back to us!
