Can't recommend a specific load but if you go to Buffalo Bore's website they have several 45LC loads from mild to wild and little descriptions of what they are good for.

Before you take possession of it measure the firing pin protrusion.  I really like my Redhawk but the light primer strike problem makes me question it for a defensive gun. A Blackhawk is much lighter as a “mountain gun” anyway.

Mine is at Ruger right now for repair due to light primer strikes. Other than that I really like it.

I don't own a redhawk but I've loaded a lot of .45 colt for blackhawks and my FA97.

If you want full-power loads nothing else comes close to 'lilgun powder, works great with all bullet weights but you can't load it down much, for lighter loads I like unique.

Redhawk cylinders are quite long so you should be able to use just about any bullet, I like heavy hardcast in a .45, but if your throats are tight it will shoot jacketed better I've had good luck with speer deepcurl jacketed and cast performance bullets.

I use a Lee factory crimp die, CCI MLP primers and starline brass.

For SC and if you reload, 250 XTP. If you don't reload, look at underwoodammo.com. He has some really good quality 45 Colt ammo at very reasonable prices, $37 for 50. I carry a different load up here in Alaska, 23 gr 296 under 310gr cast GC bullet.

What would you have to shoot in the SC mountains?

If you don't handload, you should.

If a .45 Redhawk were mine, I'd cast the Scoville 285 grain LSWC and find a load that I liked, sending it about 1200-1300 fps. Then I'd load an ammo can full of that and do my best to shoot that gun loose.

I do reload and that 285 would work, I've been looking at it and a 300 grain, hunting hogs run 300 to 400 lbs, bears run 300 to 450 in the mountains I go in Tn,Nc, Va.

I can nearly guarantee that either bullet at 1100+ fps will not be recovered from most animals. Your only chances of stopping either inside an animal would be a lengthwise shot on a bear or HUGE hog. Probably not even then.

Edit: Elmer Keith shot a large mule deer several times at 600 yards with a ~250 grain bullet at 1400 fps at the muzzle. Not a single bullet was recovered.

I like 250 grain cast bullets with 8 to 9 grains of Unique powder.

A scumbag, wild pig, perhaps even a black bear. Most likely just scumbags.

I load an Elmer Keith style load for .44 mag and .45 Colt. Not quite as hot though.

A jacketed soft point is what I carried when I lived in Alaska (44 mag). They work very well and make for faster reloads with a speedloader.

I use a 335 cast with 23.5 grains (maybe just a little more ) of 296. This load is very consistant shot to shot with no pressure spikes.
