Has anyone here ever did a do it your self change of the outer spring in the recoil spring assembly on a Kimber Ultra? The assembly with new guide rod is $46 bucks but they sell the outer spring for $8. Just wonder how involved the job is and what tools are needed?

The outer spring is actually pretty easy to change.

Field strip the pistol and remove the barrel.  Insert the recoil spring (w/the L-shaped tool inserted in the guide rod) in the slide, where it normally would be.  Use your thumb to push it forward, removing the L-shaped tool, and then slowly release the pressure.  You can now remove it from the slide and change the outer recoil spring.  Pushing it hard enough in the slide to reassemble can sometimes be a challenge, so you might want to have someone else there to reinsert the L-shaped tool, while you push the guide rod with both thumbs.

I think you can see a clip on one of the other forums that takes you through this.
