I was browsing at the fun shop with my fiance the other day and she briefly got to handle a  Sig P232 in .380. She liked the ergonomics of it and I am considering buying one for her personal protection. Curious if anyone else owns a P232 and what opinions/thoughts you may have on the P232 as a CCW for a lady. She's a fairly experienced shooter but still has relatively small hands and I think something with mild recoil is better then say a subcompact .357 or .45acp. She can't stand the ergonomics/trigger of Glocks, so Sig Sauer is the most realistic avenue for a carry piece

Are her hands really, really small?  If not, go with the P239 9mm.  The .380 is a little too small for defense, IMO.  If Sig made the P232 in 9mm, I would buy at least two.

I may have her look at the P239 as well. It seems the P239 is close to the P228/P229 in size (not double-stack and slightly smaller). As always, the pistol she actually carries is better then the one that she leaves at home. I'll see if I can find a P239 for her to look at and/or shoot. Maybe the P239 isn't too big - will see. I agree 9mm is better then .380acp - but most important is what she finds comfortable. She wasn't crazy over the grip on my P229 but I realize P239 is a single stack magazine.

I'll second that.

J_Smith,
The problem my wife had with the P232 was pulling the slide back.  That was a deal breaker & we ended up going with a small revolver.

+1 to the P239 9mm suggestion.

ETA: I don't like the magazine release on the P232.

The P239 lower frame is closer to the P232 than the P228/229.  Both are 6.6 inches long and 1.2 inches in width.  The slide on the P239 is what makes it look big.

I have both the P232 and a P239 in .357 and .40. I like the P232 as a smaller item to carry, and the Governor's Protective Detail uses the P232 for some things, but I usually wind up carying the P239.

Let your fiance try both, and see what she likes. A .380 will do a lot, if used properly, and if she won't carry something heavier, she'll still be able to be armed.

The P232 does fit the hand well.

Thanks for all the opinions so far. I'll try to find a place that has both a P239 and a P232 in stock so she can compare the two. I may look today at both at a gun shop and see how they compare.

If there's a range that will let you try them out, that's best.

Sig 232 in .380 will suffice for a back up/ccw quite well.  Its ergos make it very comfortable for both.  While the .380 isn't the greatest round going for it, I feel comfortable enough with to use as my daily CCW and back up as I shoot it well and thats what counts.

If she’s got short fingers she may find the P232 trigger a bit of a stretch when in DA mode.

Note that since it’s a straight blowback, the P232’s recoil is surprisingly snappy.

I also dislike the heel mounted mag release, the internal slide stop, and the fixed (not removable) front sight.

That said, it is an accurate, reliable, and very well made pistol.  Still, the P239 really is a better design (other than maybe the squared off grip).

Yesterday I compared the P239 and P232 side by side and ended up ordering a P239 (Black Nitron finish Stainless) SA/DA in 9mm. Got the Sigarms LE deal which includes a 3rd mag and night sights for an extra 30-40 bucks. I think the P239 will be ideal for her personal needs and its about the same size as the P232 but with the added advantage of 9mm and, in my opinion, a better magazine release. She has fired my P229-R-DAK .40 several times and I think the negatives for her were the DAK trigger pull, the P229 grip size, and weight. The P239 should fit the bill. Thanks for all the input :D I'll post feedback when she gets to fire it.

Glad to see you settled on the 239 over the 232. I'm sure she'll do great with it.

Wow!

She does have pretty small hands.  Looks like that P239 fits her perfectly!

Incidentally, (not that it’s any of my business and heaven forbid I would try to tell your little lady how to hold her P239) but her grip is pretty much the old “cup and saucer” type.

She might do a bit better if she raised her left (support) hand up almost on line with her right hand and used both hands to grip the pistol.

Just my opinion of course!

I think that's a habit she has from firing her Dad's Redhawk and other revolvers growing up. She's had a lot of exposure to firearms and shooting but is still learning. She started out shooting in some variation of an Isosceles stance but improved her shooting with the modified Weaver. Good advice though.

She was really happy at how lightweight and easy to shoot it was for her. I love my P229 - but the grip, weight, and DAK trigger on the P229 weren't to her liking.

I know "His" and "Hers" Sig's........pretty sappy in Arfcom sort of way

(Yes, the P239 is unloaded)
