I have noticed that many pistol mags hold more than what is stated. My XD/Glock and 92 all hold one extra round than the listed.

Should I load the extra one?
any negative effects?

Personally, I've yet to have a mag fit more than its stated amount of rounds. I have 5 mags for my Beretta 92, 2 factory 10 rounders, 1 Mec-gar 18 round mag with +2 adapter and 1 ProMag 15 rounder and  none fit more than advertised but with my Beretta its easy enough to load a round before you slap in a fresh loaded magazine.

As long as that extra round feeds properly in your XD then the only problem I could imagine would be your mag springs wearing out a little faster maybe....

No.  Just because you can shove 10 lbs of shit in a 5lb sack, doesn't mean you should.

The engineers who created the magazine listed it to hold a certain amount of rounds for a good reason.

In this case, I'd trust the folks that designed the magazine and the firearm for which it was intended, and fill it to the capacity they specified.

Absolutely right. A major reason ANY spring fails is that it is compressed or stretched beyong its elastic limits. Don't go beyond the manufacturer's stated limits.

+1 on what they both said.  Anything beyond a magazine's normal compression//decompression cycles will wear out the spring significantly faster, and might possibly have a negative effect on feeding.

No you shouldn't. If it says 10 rounds, load 10 rounds.

Loading more causes jams in my experience.

No.

Magazines need a little extra space to let the cartridge stack (for want of a better term) compress when seating the magazine in a firearm with the slide or bolt forward.  If that space isn’t available, you can’t get the magazine locked in.

Admittedly, when seating the magazine with the slide or bolt to the rear, this isn’t an issue.

My M9 mags will hold 16.  I do it at the range, but maybe I shouldn't now.  I never did it when the mags are ready to go for SD.

FWIW, then you have some of us that fully understanding the reliability aspects of semi-auto pistols and demand 100% function from them, that download our mags by one regularly, instead of cramming another round in.......

Your choice, IMO.
