Ok so I am in the process of getting my golden ticket (here in CA) and I don't have a compact handgun (no past need for one) so I've been reading up and doing a lot of research. I don't wear a lot of baggy clothes and I'm 6'1'' 210lb. It comes down to the below 3:

1. Springfield XD subcompact .40
2. Glock 30 (or 36?) (willing to look at the 27)
3. Colt Defender .45

Keep in mine I hate glocks and .40s (The other guns on my card will be a springfield custom 1911 and a USP .45 compact) But I need a gun I will want to wear in the summer and something that is practical. Any advice would be great! Thanks guys!

Consider the Kimber ultra CDP II .45?  Not on your list, but worth a look.......

i carry a G19 perfect practical to carry and still practical to shoot at the range and get to know it, if you real sub compact it wont be quite as practical,

if you are really set  on the sub compact look into the Kimber line o fire arms they make some of the nicest sub compact i have seen

gotta remember that a glcok will always go bang when you pull the trigger isnt that what you want for CCW ?  whne are you gonna shoot a bad guy at more then 20 feet?
good luck

+1

I carry a GLOCK 19 everyday and it is the perfect CCW IMO. The pocket pistols have their purpose. I carry a Kahr PM9 and a Kel-Tec P-32 as back up guns.

My GF just got a subcombat XD. It's really nice. She liked it so much she traded her 1911 for a full size to use for IPSC. I prefer 1911s, but the tiny XD sure looks tempting.

Thanks guys.

No thanks on a 9mm. Seen too many people in the field survive 9mm wounds and I'm not counting on a headshot during a stress situation.

I will check out the kimber although I have a friend that has one and his does jam every now and then. I've never thought of kimber as a rough and tough carry weapon.

Glock and XD seem to be my practical options...

9mm FMJ is quite different from defensive HP 9mm.

Glock: Just point and shoot can't get any easier than that. I like the XD but I don't like the heavier trigger pull and the pistol grip safety

I have a Glock 27, and it's smaaaalll.  Conceals nicely, though .  You can get +extensions to make it a bit larger gripwise.  IIRC you can use Glock 23 magazines, and get a grip adapter that covers the gap.  Makes it have a nearly normal grip length if that's your kinda thing.  Otherwise I'd highly recommend at least the fingertip extension, if not the +1.

I carry a full size 1911 everyday no matter the weather.  I think the holster makes all the difference IWB.  Just my .02.

+1   The G30 is a great choice for daily carry.  You've got the stopping power of a 45, with 10+1 rounds.  I've carried the 30 for just over a year now, and really can't say anything bad about it.  Of course, the new XD-45 could be a good choice too.  An extra 3 rounds of 45 never hurts.  Unless of couse it's being thrown in your direction.

I'm 6/4 and 270, I carrying a Glock 22 and a 35 in a Bianchi carry loc holster which is great.  But I just added a H&K USP Compact in Bianchi Minimalist holster which is even better.

You have seen them survive but were they in a condition to keep up the fight? I was tought to shoot to stop not to kill and in a civillian situation I am sure you were too. A 9mm Hydrashock to center mass will stop just about anyone.
BTW G19

I have a 4" XD and I love it.  I carry it everyday in a CTAC and have no problems printing in a tshirt.   Sent thousands of rounds downrange without any issues.

carry a G19 best one i have found not to small and not to big, and it always goes bang, not to mention it is light and skinny no sharp edges which makes it comfortable to carry
