I agree with you. Besides why check the gun with your hand anywhere near the muzzle. Remember Murphy's law.

My new Kahr Arms 1911 Government model doesn't have em'.
 I'm really starting to love 1911s. This pistol doesn't have too high of a price tag either. I do wish the grip safety was a bit longer, and the hammer a little shorter. I'm getting pinched a lot. |

Near the muzzle?
With a press check, your putting your funger VERY close to the TRIGGER! I'll grasp the back the the slide every time. Why take chances? Jack for your question: " Must every current 1911 have front slide cuts?" Yes they must.

Yes I totally agree, I wanted a new colt XSE or Gunsite, but I really hate the front serrations.
Colt has a new series 70 replica which I think is awesome, Im gonna buy one soon; no front slide serrations! www.colt.com/CMCI/Series70.asp The other problem is that as with the 70 & 1991 if they build a gun with no front cuts, then they will not angle the rear cuts. My series 80 Mark IV has rear cuts only and they are angled, this is hard to find nowadays, it looks like the kahr above has angled rear cuts, but hard to find on a colt. |

I will use them if they are there, but I prefer mine without them. I wouldn't pass up a deal on one just because it had them, though.

I agree. Several models from Springfield are available without them. Les Baer will custom produce their guns without them if you ask. The Colt 1991 series and the Series 70 reproductions dont have them.
So, they are out there. I agree. They ruin the classic lines of the pistol, and I chamber check without them easy enough. |

They is ugly!
They're usefull for Hollywood when the actor's has his hand damn near inside the barrel and pulls back the slide in a slow motion shot. |

It gives people more options. It most likely started with the IPSC bunch having optics in the way of the rear serrations. I am sure there are plenty of guns without them, you just find them offensive and have become overly sensitive to them.

I don't see it as a problem; some JB Weld (or Bondo), wet/dry sandpaper and Brownells Gun-Kote
and those front serrations are gone!

Taking it a step further, I prefer the rear cocking grooves to be vertical not slanted forward.
As far as the front grooves, I wouldn't use 'em and they are just another area to clean. But I won't pass up an otherwise good gun because they are there either. |
