Hello,
I saw that Cabelas has the M&P9 for $349, $368 with tax and then you get the two mags and little ammo with the rebate.  Aimsurplus has the used leo trade in .40 for $299 shipped with one mag. Add $25 transfer fee so total of $325. I am not a big fan of handguns but I do have a couple of Glocks, Beretta  92f, revolver and a 22 target.  I handled an M&P once,  felt very good.
I think I am going to pull the trigger on buying one.  Do I go with the 9mm since I already have plenty of ammo or do I spend the  money on a new to me caliber(.40)?  With the .40 I have to buy more mags and of course a bunch more ammo since I have none at all.  I like the idea of having a .40 caliber but then I will be buying ammo to test the gun plus defense ammo so I will be spending another $200 min on ammo for it.  The mags at Aim are $11 a piece for the .40.
Thoughts?
Dan

Get the 9mm especially if you already ammo committed no use in adding another caliber to have to stock.  I am trying to get rid of my 40/357 pistols so I can get down to only 9 and 45.  The 9 is softer shooting, cheaper, and you can shoot more of it for every dollar you spend which translates into more range time.

After you buy about 4 or 5 boxes of commercial .40 ammo, the cost savings of buying the .40 gun will be nullified.

I take it that the 349 is for a Gen 1?

Correct. It is not a 2.0 but I am okay with that.

Thanks to everyone...I am going to get the 9mm.

I believe someone here posted gander mtn was having a 50% off guns. Might be worth a look if you have time.

.40's have become cheap because nobody wants them anymore. They were popular for a while during the 2000's but have become sort of a relic now. A few agencies still use them like some highway patrols but they are being phased out pretty much everywhere.

9mm is cheaper, lighter, less recoil, holds more rounds, easier to find (more common) and accomplishes the same thing as .40.
I would stick to 9mm even if you had no other guns but since you already have 9mm it is even more of a reason.

I bought one of those LE .40s youre looking at. Its a great pistol, really really nice actually.

Remember if you get the .40 version a barrel and magazine swap makes it a 9mm.

$12.99/50 for .40 range ammunition isn't going to bankrupt anyone.

Buy the .40; it can be re barreled to 9mm or .357 SIG and they're great shooting pistols in .40.

You could get either one, and buy a performance center upper kit in the other caliber.

The frames are the same, so a caliber conversion is not a problem. If I had to decide, I'd buy the pistol in 40 sw, and buy a performance center slide kit in 9mm.

The slide kits allow for easy mounting of a red dot as they are milled out already. The nice thing about the s&w performance slides is that they come with adapters for most red dot sights, and the barrels are ported. Another benefit in buying a 40sw M&p is that you can pick up a 357 sig barrel for about $75 from midway USA - the mags are the same for both 40 and 357 sig.

I did this and I'm very happy with my kit.

I much prefer 9mm over 40S&W, so I'd go with the 9mm.

Damn OP, what do you do with "hard" decisions?

Get the 9mm.

I agree with the others. The 9mm is the way to go. For only a few dollars more you get a new pistol. Does S&W still have the ammo/mag deal going on?

Just an update... I bought it online for $349.  Cabelas sent an email Monday saying it was ready for pickup.  I figured I would pick it up yesterday.  I looked online Monday night and it was listed at $299. When i went to pick it up and I showed them.  They made the adjustment.  I was pretty happy with the end result.

Good deal. You did the right thing shying away from the .40. .40 S&W has a number of disadvantages, but one of the primary ones is it operates right at the very top of it's pressure curve, being  "hot loaded" (compared to say 9 or .45) and is both hard on guns (which tend to be 9mm's shoehorning in a bigger cartridge) and shooters. With current modern loads 9mm very much equals or surpasses the .40, and you get more of them in a magazine to boot.

I got one for $299 as well. I'm not sure why I bought it but I did. I need another 9mm like I need a hole in my head.

I had three $50 cards I paid $40 a piece for but used them towards my crossbow. I'm going to start collecting those cards.

Op my M&P LE 40 is having light strikes so Im replacing the striker spring and the recoil spring/guide rod while I'm at it. $33.

That brings it to $369 so you got a better deal than me! I am digging the .40 though I must say. 155gr FN, 5.3gr Titegroup is proving to be a great load.

Only thought is that $25 seems really high on a transfer.  Most places here do $20, or $10 if you have a CCW.

For the slight price difference, I would probably get the 9mm.  Extra mag makes up half the price and you are getting a new gun with warranty.

I like both the 9mm and .40. With your situation I'd opt for the 9mm. Good pistol.

Just an update....I purchased the 9mm.  It is already on the way back to S&W because the roll pin for the extractor was not installed completely.  I caught my hand on it because it was sticking out so far.

Smith's CS is good but it still sucks that you have to send it back.

The only m&p I've ever had to send back was an m2.0.
