I am wanting to build a bobtailed commander size gun. how much money would I have wrapped up in it to get a finished product? I want it to be top of the line gun. I understand itd be easier to buy a nighthawk or something but I would rather one that means something

These types of projects can spiral out of control...in the cost department.....If you have a decent understanding of the 1911 platform.....and decent mechanical skills I would say go for it......

Start with someones prefitted slide/barrel/frame combo..........this will get you well on your way........I would say Fusion, Wilson, Caspian...........etc

No tools, easily the cost of a true custom 1911 and then some more.

My advice = don't.

You will need lots of time, money and patience.  Since I have little time and less patience, I'd just buy one.

YMMV

1911s do not go together like AR-15s.

They require a decent amount of hand work and fitting to get them up and running accurately and reliably.

If you want to try something you might want to at least start with an otherwise working gun.

And remember, try to work on the cheaper part first.

It is much harder to put metal back than take it off.

You should get at least Kuhnhausen Volume I and read it before making any decision.

have a read and see if you are up to the task.
also the amount of tools, parts that you mess up and refinishing should also be factored in.

Good advice.  In the end for the same cost or LESS you can get a almost new semi custom one.  I did it more for the experience cause I'm crazy like that but if I had to do it over again I wouldn't.
