I currently own a Springfield Armory mil-spec that I put a Wilson combat trigger in. The gun shoots great but I think its time to step up to a higher end 1911. I realize I can send off my Mil-spec to Novak and have a few hundred worth of mods done to it but I want to go ahead and buy a nice 1911 with all the bells and whistles out of the box.

I'm looking at a SA Loaded or Operator. What other brands and models have you guys tried and fell in love with?

My price range is around $1500 so sell me on what the best I can get for my $$$$$$$$

ETA - I realize 1500 isn't high end (like Wilson combat or Ed Brown) I'm talking about semi tricked out, out of box 1911s

Springfield Custom Shop?

Dan Wesson also makes a damned good production 1911 for the money.

If your not really worried about resale, the Springfield custom shop could trick out you Mil-Spec, making it out preform a Loaded or other factory gun, for less than 1500. When I get off work ill put up some pics of my Mil-spec and what they did. The Mil-spec is a great base gun for a build. Out of curiosity, is yours a N or NM framed SN#?

The best thing you can do is to take that $1500 you'd waste on a mediocre 1911, add $500 to it, and send it Alchemy or Springfield Custom and have your Mil-Spec built into what you want.

Seriously.  $1500 is not high-end, and your Mil-Spec is the perfect canvas for a truly great pistol.

Suggest you consider stretching your budget about 10% and go for a new Baer PII.  You wont find a better shooter for even a thousand more, and no one will argue that you've got one of the nicest shooters available at any price.

Look for a lightly used Baer or Briley.

Both of mine ran right around a grand or a bit above [$1100]

Dan Wesson Valor, Baer Premier II or TRS / Custom Carry, Springfield TRP
Link Posted: 1/18/2014 1:12:31 PM EDT
I would say to put the $1500 into your current 1911 and you will have a much better 1911 than $1500 is going to buy. As you stated, $1500 is NOT high-end when you're talking about 1911s.

If you are set on buying another gun, I would look at Dan Wesson or STI for your price range.

Dan Wesson would be my choice for sure, damn fine 1911's for the price.

I have a TRP and really like it.  I wanted another 1911 and did a lot of research and decided to get a Dan Wesson Valor.  I think the Valor is hard to beat for the price.

Smith and Wesson Performance Center will get you good quality and plenty of bells and whistles, under $1500.

its an N, meaning assembled in Brazil. NM being American?

I've read that the parts are the same but that's internet hearsay

Baer TRS.

Don't have one, but the want is strong for that one.

Could get a Colt WC also...

If you posted what upgrades your looking for as well as if you want a rail or non-rail gun more specific suggestions could be made.

Les Baer and Colt are not in the same ballpark quality wise. Not even close.

1500 wasted on a "mediocre" 1911?  That is an ignorant statement at best.  OP, please do not listen to garbage like this.

1500 will buy you a TRP or valor, both of which I'd consider nice pistols and would be proud to own. ( and I do!)

This was my first thought as well. But the DW Valor is a real nice pistol in his price range.

I snagged an excellent condition (prob 95-98%) 2005 used Les Baer Custom Carry Hard Chrome 2 weeks ago for $1600.  Look for a gently used 1911 and save $$$.  Retail on the one I have is like $2200-$2300 with the Hard Chrome for a new one and several months wait.

This.

I too have TRP and love it. My next one will be a true high end 1911, but I love my TRP.

Since Ive only ever owned a mil-spec a TRP  would be high end to me. I know there are guys out there that have 3k worth of 1911 but Im really just looking for a good shooter that has some nice features. Something I will be carrying around from time to time and wont cry if I get a scratch on it.

here's my DW Valor with my Ed Brown exec Elite.

Pop on a blindfold, drop both guns  in a bag, give it a good shake and pull one out and shoot it. Then shoot the other. I swear that you won't be able to tell the difference in accuracy, reliability or quality between the 2.

Get a Valor,( or a DW Specialist if you want a rail ) or a TRP or  wait patiently for a gently used Baer to come along and don't look back.
Anyone who says you need to throw $3k at a 1911 before they start getting "good enough" is a knob.

this is my EDC btw :

but I'd be just as happy EDCing one of others I mentioned.

My first 1911 will be a Nighthawk or Wilson Combat. Really liking them too companies

TRP, STI Lawman, Dan Wesson all come to mind if wanting something new.

I was thinking the same way.  I was ready to order a new CQB Elite directly from Wilson Combat.  I happen to go to my LGS where I get pretty much everything from them and they had a used one in the case.  It has maybe 500 rounds through it.  It was a trade in from a gentleman that is a serious collector, found out he owns like 16 Wilson's, 13 Nighthawks and several other weapons.  The gun I would rate at 98% + condition.  I disassembled it at the store and there is practically any signs of wear.  I am sending in back to WC to change the grips, add a ambi-safety, engraving on the slide.  I'll be ahead by about $300-$500 and not have to wait 2-3 years for a new one.  To the OP, if you are set on NIB, then the TRP, Springfield Custom Shop is the way to go, if you don't have to have a NIB, then I'd strongly consider what others have said and look for used DW or something along those lines that have what you are looking for.

Just my $.02 fwiw

This is why you should use your current pistol and have work done on it by a COMPETENT gunsmith/pistol smith.  That way you can go as fast/custom as you want.  You will not be paying for anything you don't want... only what you do want.  I have said this before.... There is NO SUCH THING AS A MASS PRODUCED CUSTOM.  I'm sure there are tons of smiths out there.  I'm in TX and all my stuff has been done local... Vanden Berg Custom (281-480-3180).  Ed does great work.  Almost all of my 1911's started out as Springfield Mil-Spec or GI's.  I'd put them up against any 1911 out there.

Before you go either way, research both.

Thanks,

If you can spend a little more I'd say a Baer Premier II . I got mine NIB from 1911Heaven.com for $1765.00 shipped .
Link Posted: 1/20/2014 1:31:25 PM EDT
For 1500 or under I'd say a Dan Wesson or a TRP. A used Baer if they can be found. You also said "around" 1500, I got my used Wilson for 1750, and Im damn happy with it.
Link Posted: 1/22/2014 8:36:19 PM EDT
$1500 will get you a Dan Wesson Specialist.  I own a Wilson, Nighthawk and a Christensen.  While the Dan Wesson is not quite in that ball park, I can tell you it is probably the most gun for the money you will get.  I really like mine a lot.  Flush cut slide stop, reverse cut crown, ambi safety, serrated slide top, speed chute. very tight fitting gun.  It is a very frequent go to gun for me.
Link Posted: 1/23/2014 5:24:18 PM EDT
$1500 will get you a great used Baer!!

In believe that a reasonably priced used Baer is one of the best deals on a 1911.
Link Posted: 1/23/2014 11:04:43 PM EDT
You need a colt rail gun

^This^

I had a Springfield Loaded and was happy until I shot a Baer, that was a game changer.. I ended up going through a local gunsmith building a custom 1911, mainly because I was able to sit down with the Gunsmith who build it. Otherwise would have got a Baer, may still get one.

i was very lucky to find a Ed Brown Kobra Carry in stailess for $2150. For your max amount of money of about $1500 I would clearly look at the Valor especially the valor stainless V-Bob. We are talking tool steel internal and a beautiful fit and finish. It is almost the equal of my Ed Brown or a Wilson which are over priced in my opinion. My Dan Wesson CCO even has a ramped barrel to protect its aluminum frame from hollow point. I actually have no complaints about any Dan Wesson.

Springfield TRP

I really like mine.
Link Posted: 1/28/2014 10:24:14 AM EDT
For $1500, TRP is the move.
