I'm helping a buddy get some info on a P-38. The gun was taken off a thug by has grandfather decades ago when he was a cop.

Modern semi-auto rifles are more my forte'. Old WW2 foreign handguns are far from it. I tried looking over at the P-38/PPK forums, but I don't have enough info for a starting point.

The gun has surface rust, mainly on the right side of the slide from being stored in a foam pistol case for years. The left side isn't rusty, but it seems to be discoloration of the finish.

All the SNs on the parts match. I don't see any import marks, although I'm not sure what form they'd take on an older gun. Slide markings are 95XX b ac 45

My camera sucks, so it takes some effort to get some good pics. This is what I was able to get.

AC was Walthers code for manufacturing in WWII. What he has is either a late war factory mismatch or one that got mismatched by a GI at some point. Figure it at $450 for a shooter.

Why is it a mismatch?

I'm gonna clean it up some as suggested. I'd really like to get the trigger assembly to work properly.

Wow, must have been overtired when I read that last night. I thought it said it was mismatched. But still in that condition the value is about spot on still. OP if you contact THOR a member here he can restore that gun to look factory new. But then you probably wouldn't want to shoot it.
