Are diffrent gun's timed diffrent? if so can we focus on the colt python? I was shoot a revolver teh other day and every 4th shot or so the trigger was real hard to pull and you had to and you had to let go of the trigger and try again or you had to move the cylinder back.

Wheel gun timing is the Hand Assembly against the Ejector Ratchet on the cylinder to lock the next round into place before the hammer falls.  Basically, when you pull the trigger, the hand cams out/up and starts to turn the cylinder, with the cylinder lock unlocking to allow the cylinder to start to move, then releasing and locking the cylinder back in (next round) before the hammer strikes.  When a pistol gets out of time, the hand will not rotate the cylinder far enough and the cylinder does not lock into place.  

To test an unloaded pistol, put your hand against the side of the cylinder and pull the trigger. When the hammer falls, the cylinder should be relocked into the next location.  If the tension causes the cylinder to not rotate around far enough to relock, then the pistol is out of time.

As far as correcting timing, it more that just working the hand or ratchet, it's time to tighten up the entire pistol.  

The first step is to check the amount of movement that the cylinder has on the crane.  This slop can be corrected by swaggering the crane to take out the forward movement. Then the Barrel cylinder gap is checked for a gap no more than .006.  If excessive gap is found, then the barrel is set back one thread and the barrel reinstalled/fitted to get the correct gap. Also, depending on the condition of the cylinder front face, if pitted, it can be faced to remove any pitting before the barrel B/C gap is set. After this, the crane/cylinder is checked/corrected for alignment to insure that the cylinder and barrel are in alignment.
Once the cylinder and barrel are tight and true, then the Ratchet is check to remove any burs, or replaced if chewed up, and the hand fitted/stretched/replaced to ensure the correct timing.

A: Don’t shot the pistol.  To prolong the life of the pistol/timing, shoot light loads.  Full loads cause more stress to the parts and the pistol wears out faster.

A:Wheel guns all time using a star, hand, and cylinder lock up.  Regarding timing the Python, your first step is to just take the pistol to a smith that has replacement parts, the machines to set back/face a barrel, the skill to use them, and have him check the pistol over.  The problem could be as simple as the bur in the FCG , the pistol needing to be pulled down and clean/lube, or it may be as severe as the pistol needing to be re-built (which runs around $200 if no new parts are needed).

Point blank, without having the pistol in hand to check out the play, gaps, and condition of the star and hand, I can not give you any one area to check.  If you have someone that can go over the pistol, pull it apart and clean it, then here is a site that may help you out.
