I'm new to Glock and I can't keep all the numbers straight.  Is there an easy way to know what caliber and frame size from the name?  Is there a rhyme or reason to the model numbering?

No pattern, other than the model numbers occur as the different models come on line.

Unless you're taking an exam on them, I'm not sure why it's important to have them memorized.

My assumption, is when the first glock was made, it has a 17 round mag.  So it was called the glock 17.  The next model was called the 18, then 19, etc.  That is the logic, but remembering all the numbers can be quite confusing.

IIRC it was based on which Glock patent number it was, 17 being Glock's 17 patent

Yep, it has nothing to do with holding 17 rounds.

To add to that:

C = Compensated (ex. G17C)
SF = Short Frame (ex. G21SF)

And the new Glock 30S is a 30 SF frame with a 36 slide.

I always thought SF stood for Slim Frame.

I started by just learning the 9's and 40's.

Then I learned 20 10MM and 21 .45.  I still don't know all the others by heart and if someone says 30 or 36 I have to check.

Learn the same frame/slide different calibers and its easier:

what i consider "normal"

9/40 subcompact 26/27
9/40 compact 19/23
9/40 full size 17/22
9/40 practical/tactical 34/35

bigger/thicker then 9/40/357:

10mm/45 full size  20/21
10mm/45 compact 29/30

Remember most of the "30's" numbers are odd balls.  The 3 GAPs, the 3 357sigs (same size as 9/40s), the practical tacticals, and the slender subcompact 45.

And remember the only two in the teens are 9's.

I just keep the ones I want the most in order on a note pad.

Because if there was some easy way to keep them straight, I wouldn't have to look them up each time someone mentions it to see what it is.

It's about like trying to distinguish Savage models.

I really want the Glock 40 to be a .22 LR.

So the G22 is a .40 and the G40 is a .22.

Maybe if they ever do make an AR15 it will be the Glock 47............
