How reliable is an all stainless Colt 1911?

[ARCHIVED THREAD] - How reliable is an all stainless Colt 1911?

I ask because in the past, in my experience, all SS autos weren't reliable. Now that Colt has sold to GD, I'm thinking about buying an all SS 1911 before the prices skyrocket.

Early SS semi autos like AMT had galling issues.

I have two stainless Colts and they are as 100% reliable as my carbon steel 1911's.

As far as Colt goes, the stainless 1911s I have owned have been one hundred percent.

The original issue with stainless autos was that the major components were built of the same alloys and during firing the components would gall causing both severe wear and malfunctions. I believe it was Smith and Wesson who discovered using alternating weapons grade alloys would allow stainless guns to function as reliably as carbon steel weapons.

Well, you learn something new everyday. What year are we talking about? I have never seen galling on a SS auto.

Had an AMT Back UP (.380) that had galling issues. I sold it about a year after I got it. I moved here in 1983, and it was gone before that. I'm thinking I got it in 1981.

SS is actually harder than regular steel...that's why gunsmiths have more trouble doing trigger jobs on SS guns...also that's why SS used to cost more than blued guns (except for ruger, it's about the same now ususally).

I have a "few" SS 1911 Colts. I have never had a problem with Galling. I have seen it in the past tho, but it was usually confined to some of the AMTs as was mentioned by another poster.
