I just traded a USED FNX 9mm for this 228. Looks to be used about as much as the FNX. The 228 is still nice and tight/no rattle and the slide glides like butter.

I know nothing about Sig's but I always wanted a 228 and 226. Anyone able to tell me anything about my new pistol?

That's not just a 228....that's a 228 R.

You did VERY well.

I am jealous

The 228 has a much better balance than any of the mid size 9mm metal guns I have ever owned.

That thing should shoot like a dream if its any thing like my 1994 model.

The Magazines are marked:

Sig Sauer
P226
.357
.40

Does that look/sound right for a 9mm 228?
Link Posted: 8/31/2015 11:23:09 AM EST
Yes the 226 mags should fit them.

I've never seen the 357 /.40 mags though so that sounds weird.

Mine came with Ban era 13 rounders

I just bought (3) 15 round Mec-gars for it though and is what I shoot. Mec-gars are the OEM builders and what you should buy for any extras or replacements.

The mag thing is perplexing to me hopefully somebody else will chime in and enlighten both of us.

I has one Mec-Gar and 2 of these:

Sounds like they might ave given you the wrong mags lol.

Just buy Mec-gar ones and call it a day. You scored big though

Some .40" S&W mags will feed 9x19mm w/o incident. Popular tactic during the ban years - 10 rnd .40" = 12 rnd 9x19mm. I know the Turkish CZ 75 knockoffs we sell have the same mag in 9mm & .40". Marked 9x19mm on one side, .40" S&W on the other.

These say .357 and .40 and are marked as 12 round mags like 226 mags. I am at a loss with why they were with the gun and in the box. I will load them and see if they feed. I think your right people use them for extras capacity as they seat fine in the gun and look identical in shape size to the Mec-Gar mag that is marked 228.

Nice trade. I would use the mags for range use only and buy some made for 9mm. They may run fine, but is it worth taking that chance when your life is on the line? Mags are cheap, just sell those and use the money to buy the proper ones. As long as there is no excessive wear on the rails, you done good.
Link Posted: 8/31/2015 3:49:39 PM EST
You did good.
228R's are not very common.
You have a stamped slide with a locking block, so you have to pay attention to roll pins when disassembling/reassembling.
If you want to use it as a shooter, head over to top gun supply and numerich and stock up on parts, cause this gun isnt being made any more.
Specifically, you want to stock up on springs, pins, and a spare extractor or two...(those are just about the only thing that wears out on them).
You could also install a Short Reset Trigger (SRT) if you were so inclined.

Bring the gun with you when purchasing magazines for it. There have been a few changes in mags where Sig didnt tell people and some mags wont work, others will.
Like has been mentioned before, using 40 cal mags to hold 9mm was done semi regularly during the AWB several years ago. I'm not aware of issues in doing this. If it works, it works....

Good job on the trade, I'd have happily done that deal.
Link Posted: 8/31/2015 4:17:35 PM EST
I passed up a deal on a P228R awhile back and kick myself for it ever since. At least I have my W. German P228 with an SRT setup and it is sweet.

His apparently has the rare 3-shot burst trigger.

To make this post Tech - apparently the new "228" is not the same gun as OP's, and won't take original 226/228 magazines?
Link Posted: 8/31/2015 4:42:03 PM EST
Thanks for the replies. I had heard if people using .40 mags in 9mm for added capacity. These seem to hold 16 9mm. I plan on buying some mags made for the gun however, since I buy all my guns to shoot not look at.

As far as replacement parts. Which pins and springs specifically should I stock up on?
Link Posted: 8/31/2015 4:50:06 PM EST
And apparently it goes full auto
Link Posted: 8/31/2015 5:02:25 PM EST
The .40 cal mags hold 16 rds and they hand cycled flawlessly.

That is a possibility.

There are at least 2 frames of 229 9mm where the magazines are not interchangable. It's possible that current M11 magazines will not work in the previous gen 228.

I honestly dont know for sure since I dont own a 228.

228 9mm Parts kit

Sear Pivot Spring These pivot pins are small and seem to capable of changing color to perfectly match whatever flooring surface they fall on. Buying at least 3 of these is probably a good idea. I've never seen one wear out or break. But they can and will get lost.

SRT Kit

That should cover most things.
Search Numerich for 228 parts as well.

You got IM as well.

I checked the front sight is a nite sight but it's getting faint.

Thanks for all the help guys. I know nothing of Sig's but I always liked the 226 and 228 and wanted one.

So do I look for 228 or 229 mags?

Honestly, I dont know.

I've got 229 mags that fit my father's M11.
No idea if they'll fit or work in your P228R....

Best guess on this one is to bring the gun and some dummy rounds when you find some mags and see if they work.....

ETA - Top Gun supply Sig Mags

I'd order a 13 rounder and 15 rounder and see if they work.....

You could also send Sig an email with your gun's serial number and see what they suggest...

Mec-Gar makes the mags for Sig LE division. US general commercial (vs LE/Blue Label sales) come with Check Mate mags....

I've never seen an issue with the Mec Gar mags.

Not my auction, and I think he's asking too much....but it does appear to be in good condition despite the internals being monkey'd with somewhat (polished inside? WTF does that mean?)
It also lists two 13 round magazines with it...which I THINK was what the 228's used to come with. I remember being in my 20's when my Dad had a 228 and I had a 226 and I couldnt for the life of me, understand why someone wanted a gun that was slightly smaller than the 226 and carried 2 less rounds on board.

Now that my duty gun is a 229, and I tried concealing a 226......I get it.

The frame width is slightly thicker in the redesign of the 229 to accommodate .40sw round. These mags will be marked as 229-1
229-1 mag

Thank you.

Last question, what holster? 229 holster?
Link Posted: 8/31/2015 10:02:49 PM EST
That im not 100% sure on. Im thinking its basically a 229 frame because of the rail. Your safest bet would be to try it in person.
Link Posted: 8/31/2015 10:33:45 PM EST
I would safely bet a 229 R holster will fit it.

My P228R will not take the latest mags. I've never tried running a .40S&W mag through it. I have plenty as I also have a P229R with DAK trigger that is supposedly n overrun from a DHS contract.

I'd look for 228 mags. I've bought from Greg Cote, LLC.
