My birthday is a couple months away, and what better way to treat myself than get a "high line" 1911.
I'm thinking an entry level model, 5", for occassional shooting and possible carry. To you guys that own them, which did you buy/recommend and why? Thanks  UPDATE: Just picked it up tonight from my favorite funshop. Used but never fired! Gonna take it out tomorrow night to break it in, range report to follow.  |

Yes I have. my friend was selling an SV, which got me thinking about high-end 1911's.
His SV was a limited IPSC gun & it was a tack driver. Unfortunatly I don't have the money right now and had to pass. |

Of your choices listed, I'd go with the Ed Brown. I think the best buy around is still the Rock River Arms though. If the Basic Carry meets your requirements you'd still have $400-$500 for ammo and leather.

I don't...yet (currently gathering funds to send YB my 1991A1 for the 1* treatment). Why? Almost universally reccomended by folks who say "If you can't afford one of Hilton Yam's guns...". |

If you want an off the shelf gun, the Nighthawk is a hell of a gun. For about the same money, you really can go full custom. First, find somebody with a C&R FFL who has an account at Midway and Brownells. Then, decide exactly which parts you want. Get the slide stop, extractor, barrel, mainspring housing and everything else that exactly meets your idea of the "perfect" 1911. Then, order a Caspian slide and frame and have it shipped to your FFL. Again, decide what your "perfect" configuration is with repsect to slide serrations, front strap treatment, sight cuts (getting them from Caspian means a cheaper to have it built), bevels and the rest. With this pile of parts, you can have a competent 'smith build the gun and it shouldn't cost you more than $600 in labor since all the major stuff is done.
You'll be into the parts somewhere between $1200 and $1500 if you're getting top shelf parts. |

Why buy one of "Hilton Yam's" guns when you can have other's machine work without the "7 year" wait and the ego? 1*... I've shot one and handled one... they seem well worth the money to me. I'm now looking for a good Colt to send to the Yost-Bonitz shop for a 1* Elite package. in_burrito - Why do you always seem to come out of the woodwork whenever the Yost shop is mentnioned? Just curious. |

Yes your are correct and I didn't mean to offend or start anything. I just have noticed in the past that you seem to have some sort of problem with the Yost products that is never really explained . I was more or less wondering if this was going to be another one of those threads. |

I like my CQB, but for the money, you'd be hard pressed to beat the Yost 1* package. I've decided after I find an S70 Colt that it is going straight to Yobo. Now, to find the Colt!

If I was buying a limited-production (high-end) 1911 I would take a look at this:

I don't know the others. Custom guns are great, but the wait is very long. I'm currently into the 5th year of waiting for mine. |

Of the choices listed in your poll, they are all worth the money.
Custom and semi-custom 1911s are all about making YOU happy. Find one that fits exactly what you want, and don't settle for anything less. You will end up getting exactly what you want eventually anyway, may as well not take any detours along the way. There will be someone who has a bone to pick with every shop out there. Whose name's on the gun isn't as important as the features and performance YOU want. |

If you have the dollars and can afford the wait, Ted Yost will build you one heck of a nice pistol (yes I have owned one). Other than that, you can't go wrong with a Brown, Wilson, Baer, etc.

I have two 1* Elites built on SA G.I.s and will be taking possession of a "Full House" Series 80 Colt after the Shot Show:
My soon to be Yost Colt For comparison to what Ted Yost and Co. build, I have: 1 John Jardine Valtro 2 Wilson CQBs 3 Wilson Protectors 1 RRA Elite Commando 2 ADCO/RRAs 1 Original Series 70 G prefix Colt customized by Roger at STI (my 1st 1911) 1 "modified" Kimber Warrior Have handled, inspected and shot Ed Brown Kobra and Les Baer TRS among others. Don't let anyone tell you that Yost and Co. doesn't build a great 1911. IMHO the best deals going in a 1911 are the 1* Enhanced and 1* Elite. The only thing I might have done differently on my two 1* Elites was to have a Kart instead of the two piece SA G.I. but in truth that is more want than need. |

Twas a rhetorical question. I have never seen a Yam blaster in person, nor have I ever spoken with a Yam custom owner, but I do hear a lot from people who wished that they had one. |
