Went shooting with one of my G19 carry guns. I always leave them loaded. I was going to put in a mag with practice ammo so I dropped the mag and tried to rack the slide to eject the round in the chamber. Couldn't budge the damn thing. Took me three tries before I could get it out. This round had been in the chamber at least 4 months.

What caused this? I've been around pistols for 40 years and never had this happen before.

Man o man that could be a laundry list of things. Sweat , condensation, humidity, out of spec case, tight chamber on and on. Shoot the piss out of it. Clean it. Load it back up and try to duplicate it.

I would venture to say a case on the large end of spec and a chamber on the tight end of spec.

I'm gonna check all my carry pistols tomorrow. Make sure I don't have any surprises.

They recently had bad batch come out of Glock. Someone posted that their Glock had rusted shut. Something to do with the finishing on it.
If is a recently made gun check for rust. If it's a older gun and you got the chamber round out, and the slide goes back and forth fine, then it was probably the round.

It's an older one. Slide works fine now. Got the round out and then reloaded with practice ammo and it was fine.

You've used the gun before now without issues, right? Had that round been chambered and unchambered before? What did it look like and measure to when you finally got it out?

Sounds like the round and not the gun to me.

If possible measure the length of the round verse the other ones in the mag.  A round loaded slightly to long can engage the lead and make it a bitch to unload.  A pic of the round in question would be nice aswell.

Same round may chamber fine in one pistol and not so in another, I wouldnt know anything about this

Shoot your carry gun/ammo more.

I bet if you shot it out of there it would have worked fine.

It worked fine until yesterday. I do not unchamber and re-chamber rounds. That's one reason I chamber one time and leave it alone. Unfortunately, I shot the round and the pistol worked just fine. I didn't think to save the round to check it.

I had it happen with some RangerT I pointed out back pulled the trigger & it cycled just fine, the round was chambered for years, it was in one of my XD's I don't really touch them that much.

do you press check ever? I mean, i guess if you never unchamber the gun wheres the suspicion. But just for comparison sake I chamber check every gun  ,my own included, every time i pick one up. My handguns all remain loaded, and still get press checked, and i unload and clean my primary carry about once a month to get the ghost turds out. I aldo unload to dry fire practice.  None of my rounds have set back from rechambering.

I've never had a problem with setback either. I unload and load my Glock more often than I probably should, and measure the OAL of the cartridge probably every few times. The measurement has never been different.

Not saying setback from chambering isn't a problem, but It's not happened to me yet.

Ive had a similar problem before with an HK P7 after spending maybe 6 months in the top of my admittedly cold closet. I was using BreakFree CLP lube at the time and it had gummed up the slide during the 6 months in the closet. The gun had been cleaned before storage. Ive since gone to using better/ more temperature stable lube. Not saying this is your problem, but something to consider.

I don't press check and it could have been gummed up oil.  I use Break Free, too. I failed to mention earlier that this happened in a LW barrel. It had not been shot much either.

Here's something interesting that happened when I changed back to the Glock barrel. I locked the slide back, dropped the round in the chamber, and released the slide lock. Slide slammed shut and the round dropped out the mag well. How did that happen?

Not positive on how the round hopped out when you did that, but Glock says not to load a round into the chamber and drop the slide as this will prematurely wear the extractor from it having to hop over the rim of the cartridge and if done repeatedly could work the primer out and cause the firearm to discharge when you drop the slide on the round in the chamber.

Don't do that. They are designed to to feed from a magazine just like a Mauser or 1911.

Will second what everyone else is saying.  When I first started carrying a handgun I thought this was the appropriate way to get mag capacity+1.  But, it is almost universally harder on your extractor, and guaranteed it's harder on the rim of your case. Do this to the same round a couple dozen times and you'll find yourself with a real chewed up case.

I now typically slide-lock the gun, insert a full mag, now I can visually verify there's a loaded mag visible through the ejection port. Then send the slide home to chamber a round.  Eject the magazine and either swap with a fully loaded one, or top off that mag, re-insert, press check, holster. Done.

Above poster is 100% correct..use "administrative reload " procedure he described when loading.  Other good words of advice here also.  I aleays oress check every weapon I pick up.  Even if U " know " U left a round in the chamber.   If the gun is not in Your possession 100% of the time there is a chance its not loaded.  Better to err on the side of caution here.

As far as the stuck round...I would venture its the round as opposed to the weapon..and like previously stated..if it had been fired it would have functioned properly.

Stay Safe...

This. Any time any defense guns get handled, they get a press check immediately. Just out of habit.

You did'nt have it lubed with Frog Lube by chance did you?
Tomes written about that stuff gumming up guns that are left standing for awhile.

This is why the premium carry/duty handgun ammo has nickel plated cases.
