Really wantin to get a pistol to take with me on hog hunts and walk around that'll still be good for target shooting. Would like if at all possible to keep under $400. Maybe a 9mm. Any thoughts......

Ruger revolver, maybe in 357 gp-100.

Can't see 9mm working on hogs.  And new for under $400 is going to be tough.

Yep, even used revolvers are scarce at $400.

A Ruger LCR or LCP?

well damn.....the hogs around where I normally am are no more than 150pounds (least what I've seen) so was just thinkin that would be enough to carry on the hip while I carry my rifle. What would be the best type of pistol for the best price in yalls opinion then??? I knew the $400 mark was a long shot but woulda been nice, can/willing to spend more just was hoping not to ya know.

I like the idea of one of the tank-like Ruger autos for a belt gun in the woods.
Good value, even used, and you can always beat the hog senseless with it if it comes down to it.

Your budget is low as others have pointed out.

My vote:

Glock in .45 = $440 or so + fees, ship, tax.

Used Ruger Service Six revolver in .357 mag = Should be able to find one around the $350 price point.

like I said I can and will put some more money in if needed, just would like to not have to. Is that glock .45 new or used your talking about? and where from?

Sig Sauer SP2022 9mm $394 shipped

S&W SD9 9mm $373 shipped

Get both...I did...the S&W comes with a tritium front sight and the Sig came with a mini red dot

The Ruger P-series are actually very reliable, and can be had in .45ACP.  If you want more than that, either get a revolver in .357, or a Glock in 10mm.

Impact Guns out of Utah used to sell all glocks for around $440...but that was some years ago.

I just checked the price and it looks like the new ones are about $100 more now...

So its still a great deal, but its just a bit out of your price range.

man just looked at both of them and from I can tell I'm really liking the sig!!! You have any problems with it jamming up very often though?

I'm an XD guy, and you can get used XD 45's for pretty cheap, but I personally would want something like the Ruger .357 revolvers mentioned above for a last ditch against a hog.

have done some extensive hog hunting in MS...the ones in TX, from what i've seen, etc tend to be a lot larger than the ones on avg here

that said, unless its a caged hog, i'd probably not go w/ anything less than a .45acp./.40sw; that said, i would prefer .357 or my 10mm

i'd get a used glock or a ruger wheelgun...i'd prefer to have a used glock that i know will work and run in the field than a new _insert other brand_ that may/may not work in the field or have to keep overly clean, etc to ensure proper functioning

I have the exact same pistol, only in .40s&w *(SP2340) and its been ROCK SOLID.

It has held its own against my glocks.  I've put easily more than 1000rds through the Sig now, and not ONCE have I had any FTF/FTE/etc...

Maybe a used glock in 40s@w or try to find a used springfield xd or xdm in 40 s@w.

9mm works fine on hogs.

+1 based on your request. For pigs I would go with the Ruger in 357 at a min.

a better quality used gun is superior to a lesser quality new gun- I buy nearly all my handguns used and never have had any issues.
For carrying in the woods and possible use in hunting a glock 10mm model 20 may be the best bet but if you are on a budget then ammo cost will kill you.
A good solid used 357 mag revolver would also be good- You should with a hard look be able to find a good used smith and wesson  357 under 400 bucks.

OK, so if you are in TX, chances are there is an Academy somewhere near by. They have the sig 2022 for your price range, and can even get a glock (i think .40) for 475 or so. seriously start there, they have some good deals on pistols (at least in the Houston area) now.
