A buddy of mine is looking to get rid of his SW 500 (4").  He has fired about 100 rounds of lower velocity target ammo.  I can get it for $500.  I'm not in the market for one but is this too good of a deal to pass up?  I will be moving to Montana in a few years so I think it would make a suitable backup against grizzlies and the like.  I've never shot it so I have no idea what I'm missing

for sure I'd take it for 500 if its in good shape. pics?

No pics right now.  It looks like these go for around 800-900 used?  Just trying to cover my bases in case it's too insane to shoot, maybe I can try it out and turn a small profit if I dont like it

Yeah, if it's in good shape you can likely sell it for more than 500 if you don't like it.

Has your friend looked at what he could get for it on gunbroker?

He's one of those guys that doesn't care to lose some money, and I think the price is a reflection of our friendship so he's not really trying to recover his investment.

500$ is a steal for you unless the gun has been badly abused.

I have yet to see a .500 with high round count being sold used.  Most I've seen come with a partial box (usually the first box) of ammo they shot.
If you hand load, it could be a fun gun... If your limited to factory loads, you'll go broke trying to feed it.

Do it.

I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I'd buy it for that price but they are absolutely obnoxious to shoot.

There's  a .500 Special.

Grab it. It is a great price. Then consider a solid compensator to replace the removable comp. The 4" is noisy as hell. The solid comp trades rearward thrust and noise for roll. I prefer the roll, but try it yourself and see what you think.

Thanks guys, i think ill grab it or ill regret it later. Pics incoming when i get home from vacation.

Ok true this, four(4) young men showed up at my club recently with a S & W 500 [nice case bigger than the one my last laptop came in] and  they took one (1) shot each at 25 yards..and they were DONE for the day.

They each hit the target but one(1) shot was all any of them wanted.

Couple of members have them however I haven't seen many full house loads shot

$500..buy it. If you don't shoot it, would make a good anchor for a duck boat.

The look on people's face after they shoot one is priceless.

I have fired about 5 rounds through my co-worker's. I always hit with the first round and throw the second about 8" low due to flinching.

Well, here she is all cleaned up.  I wound up paying 600 for it so I didn't completely rip him off.  Mint condition.  Trigger is amazing!  I picked up a box of Magtech 325 gr SJSP at my local shop, once I have a decent pile of brass and if I decide to keep it I'll get some dies for the 500SW and start loading my own.  I CANNOT believe S&W put the internal lock on these!  I've disabled them before on j-frames so if this one winds up being a keeper I'll disable the lock.

And just for fun, from left to right: 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP, 5.56, .500 S&W MAGNUM !!!!!!!

If you ride bicycles and have bicycling gloves, wear those. They do wonders in padding the hand and reducing/eliminating the sting.

Those top pics are pretty cool with the "ghost gun" reflection on the countertop. Nice looking Smith.

run with it.  then reload for it.  440 gr lead cast with 7 gr of trail boss will make that a dream to shoot.

OP here with a range report.  Finally took her for a spin today.  This report can be summarized in two words.  Holy.  Crap.

I was shooting Magtech 325 gr JSP.  Had two buddies with me.  Set the target at 7 yards.  "Hey ya'll, watch this"

Surprisingly, the first round hit dead on point of aim, about 1/2" left.  We were at an indoor range.  There was a popcorn acoustic ceiling.  It blew a bunch of popcorn off the ceiling creating a minor snow storm in my shooting booth.

FIred another, this one cloverleafed the first.  I said, this isn't that bad, as I loaded a full cylinder to see my odds of survival with this hunk of steel in an imagined charging grizzly scenario.  5 rounds rapid fire, all within an 8x10 square, stringing low from an obvious flinch.  The trigger is incredible.  This is the trigger all revolvers should have.

7 rounds fired, and I was done.  I can now say I've done it.  It was fun but I am looking to score a Garand from CMP.  If I had a cabin in the mountains right now I'd order up a nice oiled saddle brown leather holster and roll wth it til I die.

I'm going to try for a local sale after the holiday weekend, if not you will see it on the EE.  I know I'll regret it later.  Somebody please talk me into keeping it.

Now you know why many indoor ranges prohibit .500s.
