Thinking about picking up a Glock 17 Gen 4, has Glock made any changes to the Gen 4? I have heard of a lot of bad stuff regarding FTF and other malfunctions because of the dual recoil springs and weaker ammo.

thanks

it's been fixed. if the GEN4 is more your flavor, then get it and never look back.

I carried a gen 3 glock 22 for about 2 years but switched to a 1911, but after holding the gen 4 I feel in love with it lol.

The original Gen4 G17 used the same recoil spring(s) as the Gen4 G22. This made the G17 easier to limp wrist which resulted in stovepipe type malfunctions for many users. Glock designed a new G17 recoil assembly to solve the problem.

Buy with confidence.

10-4 so they just changed out the recoil spring? Is there any way to tell the difference between the original and the post upgrade?

I think the updated spring is marked "02". But yes it is marked to tell the difference.

+1

If you get one with the original spring call Glock and they will send the "02" spring to you.

Nope not fixed- my has a #2 spring but the front part is getting jammed in the frame. I was told they now have a #3 spring and part of the slide needs milled out to fix the problem.  Mine is getting sent back in to fix it.  Total rounds fired was 300.

I wish people would clarify what they mean by FTF. What does it mean?

Good luck on the Gen. 4 experiment OP!

Well after hearing about the #3 rod it seems like a hit and miss with the 9mm gen 4. I think I'll just wait a couple months.

Glock will send you a free upgrade if buy the current version and they come out with another. I'm running the #1 recoil assembly on my Gen4 G17 without any issues.

FTF = Failure To Fire or Failure To Feed

JoeL, any particular bullet weight causing the problems?

I had zero feeding problems.  300 hundred SELLIER & BELLOT 9MM LUGER 115GR fired no issues. When I went to clean my glock and take it apart the buffer spring/rod was stuck in the hole in the slide. I was told all new glocks now have part of the frame milled out to fix that problem.

I was having stovepipe problems but called up Glock and they overnighted a new recoil spring. Great service at Glock. Now my Gen4 runs with no problems at all.

Is there anyway to find out the approximate production date by the serial #, or if I`m getting the latest batch?  By that I mean how will I know if the new G17gen4 I pick up has not been sitting in the store`s warehouse since day one when gen4 first came out?

I still had malfunctions with mine even after changing to the 02 spring. It was hanging up on the front end as well.  I got the replacement guide rod/spring from Glockmeister and it cured the problems.

Exactly...big difference in the two! Needs to be clarified, not just in this thread, but every thread where "FTF" is claimed to be a problem.

Ok just got an update from my Gun Dealer via Glock today  They are sending me the latest spring/rod (3). They are not milling out the slide.  It should be here by next week.  I am very happy with this handgun less the small issues with the spring. I wouldn't let this stop you from buying a Glock.

I'm too used to the grip feel of a gen 3. I also didn't care for the reversible mag release. Being left handed who has trained to use right handed mag releases on all handguns the Gen 4 mag release gouges my left hand.

The 03 guide rod for the G17 is supposed to cure only the binding of the guide rod to make assebly easier due to the lack of countersink in the slide. The spring weights have not changed as far as I know. Apparently this was easier for Glock to do rather than modyfying existing slides. All other Glocks are countersunk in this area, not sure why they originally chose not to on the full size Gen 4 pistols but it certainly has caused more work for them this way.  It is rumored that Glock is considering countersinking newer production slides on the G17 and G22 at which point the original and 02 guide rods would be fine with regard to ease of assembly.
