Im looking at replacing the stock wood grips on my Springfield Mil-spec with a thinner set. Does anyone have any experience with grips made from G10?

VZ Grips makes bad ass G10 grips.
Go Here

Here is my TRP with the G10 grips from SA and my Kimber with VZ Operators grips.

The Operators are my preference because they are grippy but not so grippy they are uncomfortable without gloves.

My Colt with the same VZ Operators as above:

These are my favorite VZ grips for pretty much the same reasons as Edgecrusher  gave.

They have a great feel and an excellent grip.

My SA build I am working on I am going to put Operators on it also but in Tiger Stripe.

I had a set of double diamond VZ's on my Commander, and every 100-150 rounds, they'd shoot themselves loose, even with blue loctite.  VZ says to make a gasket out of a piece of inner tube, I now stick to wood or rubber.  YMMV.

I use the Aliens, but there all good!

I like the Mil-Tac G10 grips.

G10 is great grip material.  I don't have G10 grips on my 1911 (yet) but I own several knives with G10 grips.

Does anyone make a G10 grip with the same color and checkering size as the brown USGI grips?  That's what I want.

Mil-Tac's checkered Flat Earth Brown grips are close, but I'd prefer the darker "federal" brown and smaller checkering.

Is there a noticeable difference in the thickness of the standard to slim line grips from VZ? I haven't been able to find any dimensions or measurements on the thickness differences

My operators are not thick at all they are like a standard grip on a 1911.  But if you are talking about slim as in really thin no they are just standard thickness.

I have thin G10 grips that came on my Dan Wesson Valor and they really do offer a better grip even with my fairly large hands.  I'm going to put a similar set on my Springfield.  Of course I can't just buy a set and put them on. You have to replace the studs that hold the grips on with short studs (check this out on the VZ website).  This will cost more and I'm not sure you can just use a screwdriver to do this job.

VZ now sells little rubber bushings for their grips.  I picked up a set of Aliens for my pistol and need to get another matching set to put on my fancy new knife.

These are about as close as you are going to find.

At one time they were a custom color/pattern available from Yost-Bonitz.  This set was on the gun when I bought it, but have since been replaced.  I felt like a gun like this deserved a set of really nice wood grips.

I am not sure if they are still available or who would sell them?

g10 is the way to go for 1911 grips, imo.  wood ones look nice, but do not offer anywhere near the amount of grippiness that g10 does.

here's my VZ alien g10 tiger stripes on my springer operator:

The difference in thickness is pretty substantial. I like the feel of the slim grips though!

Pic––-> left side is VZ gator back slim.....right sight is G-10 grips in standard thickness.
Notice how much the magwell shows on the left side?

i have to say, the aliens are probably the best 1911 grips i've ever tried.  they aggressive enough to have the perfect grippiness without being sharp, and uncomfortable.  i would totally recommend them.

now the operator grips on my 5inch 1911 work better on that one, because of the nose heavy balance, the thicker operators  give you a bigger gripping surface.

Does that have anything to do with adhesion  or hold ?

I think mine just got to my house an hour ago. As a matter of fact, I think I'm going to leave work now and go find out!

Have a great weekend.

Just ordered my Black G10 Aliens. Now the hunt begins for some quality magazines.

ETA: I think I will use my Loaded coupon and get 10 of the blued 7rnd mags and upgrade them with the Tripp Cobra Super 7 kits.

My alien G10s came today, but my 1911 is at my friend's house so I can't try them on until later.

yeah the g10 material is "sharper", or more clingy, i guess is a way to describe it.  your hand pretty much sticks to it (much better than cheap rubber grips)

vz has a 15 days return policy if you don't like em, give them a try, my friend  :)

I'll throw in my seal of approval for VZ grips.  I have the Operators for my Kimber Pro Carry and I'm thinking of getting some for my TRP.  I really like the tiger stripe.
