Granted, I only looked for this answer on yahoo for about five minutes... But.. what is the difference between the 228 and the 229?

228 is only available in 9mm.....229 available in 9mm, 40SW, and .357 SIG
228 has full slide serations on the rear of the slide.....229 has slide serations only half way
I believe the slide materials are different but not sure

Correct.

The 228 slide is sheet steel formed over a mandral with the breech block pinned in.
The 229 slide is milled stainless steel.

Both are great guns but I's say sence the 229 has a milled one piece slide it is built a little better and stronger.
