I am looking at comp sight for a G17 and they are all black, which I think would be difficult to pick up in competitions.  So, does anyone paint their front sight like a bright color to see it easier?  If so, what paint do you use?

The Dawson Fiber Optic Glock Front Sight is a slightly less, uh, rustic alternative to painting your front sight.

Tried it once.  Could never get it to stick.

I do this to my handguns.  You go to the model or hobby  section of walmart or hobby lobby, where they have model cars or ships you put together they have these little glass bottles of paint.  I use a fluorescent orange with a tiny little brush.  Mine has always stayed on and been very bright.  One bottle will last you a lifetime.

Whiteout.

Cheap.  Easy to touch-up if necessary - not that it ever has been.  And I imagine that it would come off pretty easy if you wanted to go back to black.

The same on some of my handguns.

I just did the Testors gloss red on all my front sights.  Haven't gotten to the range yet, but just from practicing it really makes it a LOT easier to pick up the front sight.  Can be hard to do it right so you don't get red inside your white dot.  I painted them with Testors white first as a base to make the red a little brighter.  I also used the white to touch up the white ring around my Trijicon night sites (the white part always seemed too dull even when new).
I got a REALLY fine brush and used a magnifying glass, even then it was a little tricky (especially doing around the night sites).

Not sure how durable it will be, and haven't gotten to range yet, but overally I think it really is an excellent thing to do in terms of quickly aquiring the front site.

I decided against orange since a lot of the time at the range I get targets with an orange bullseye.  For practical shooting, orange may stand out even more.
Yellow would probably be a good option for visability, but was concerned there wouldn't be enough contrast with the white dot.  Red seems to work.

I painted up the blade of my P89 with some of the wifeys white craft paint. Works just fine. When it rubs off ill just dab on a bit more.

I have used my wife's nail polish a time or two, it sticks on there very well.

I use a toothpick to apply it.

I thought my Bronze Membership allowed photos, guess not.

Teh red really makes the front sight stand out.  I am much happier with my Trijjicon's now that I was able to make the white ring more "white".  Seems to be more noticeable now.

It does, you just need to imbed them. Fixed it for you.

From Brownells

I've used some orange paint for front sights that I bought in 91'.  Still holding up on my Smith 442 and 58.

Been doing it for years, Flourescent orange nail striping polish over a white basecoat. Take your time, use some tape so as not to make a mess, and Voila! The results will be as good as the prep work and time that you put into it.

I used Testors Fluorescent Orange of the front sight a government model 1911. It really helps with the target acquisition.

I found if I painted coat of white first and then painted the orange on top, it was noticeably brighter. It has been on for years and is showing some wear around the edges but is still going strong.

Did it on my .45 Old eyes just don't pick up that front sight as well as they use to. Just pick up some model paint from Wally world and a hobby brush and get after it.

Got first chance to shoot with the red front sights yesterday.  Made a BIG difference.  I had done 3 of my 4 pistols and last night I painted the 4th.  Highly recommend it.

What kind of paint did you use?

Testors hobby paint.  Did white first then red on top of that.  SHould make the red brighter if painted over a white base compared to black.

You need to remove ALL the oil from the area you want the paint to stick to.

Plastic insert kits used to be all the rage.

File notch in sight, fill with colored plastic.

Brownells may still even sell the kit.

I use a White Out pen as the primer and then bright red nail polish. Works greats and doesn't rub off easy through use. Easy to remove through cleaning though.
