I have some small caliber handgun ammunition that I would rather not fire in my guns, is there a safe and simple was of disposing it?

I had some 12 gauge ammo that had been stored in a very peculiar manner (hot & humid). I called the police department and they said they would dispose of it.
I had to fill out a form stating that I was voluntarily surrendering the ammo and that was that.

ETA Make sure it isn't ammo that has historical value, it may be worth something!

Take it apart with pliers, set the power on fire and trash the rest. Yes I'm a pyro.
