I'm currently looking for a set of decent synthetic grips to replace the wood with crossed cannons currently on my Loaded Model. Plenty to choose from, but the problem is I cant bring myself to pay 50+ dollars for some grips.

EE is slim pickens right now, ebay is dry, and gunbroker is hilarious.

What is a cheapskate to do?

How about next time just hold that thought until something useful to say occurs to you.

I've decided I will bite my lip and buy the Mil-Tacs I've been eyeing so that every time I look at it I won't wish I had something else.

Midway has a bunch...

Start with the cheapest and work your way up.

That was actually a very good suggestion. VZ makes some excellent stocks.

Thanks, I always seem to forget about Midway. 25 bucks is not too much to spend, I just can't justify 50 bucks and up for grips no matter how cool they are.

I realize that, but I cannot get past the price point. I'm not saying they are not nice, I'm just not going to pay 50 bucks for 1911 grips. That was the point of this thread.

ok head down to walmart to the boating section purchase some fiberglass cloth and some epoxy.

Carve grips with your nail file and pocket the savings for some black label beer.

Snatch a slat from underneath your box spring and start whittling.

I bought a pair of surplus plastic grips at a gunshow for $10. They're plenty grippy and come in any color you want as long as it's brown.

Hogue is now making G-10 grips.   They run about $40.

You may also be able to find some Navidrex Micarta grips out there at a discount, as everyone is upgrading.

Then there's the Falcon Ergo grips, which are molded plastic, but decent grips for the money.

1911's are a classic & they cry for Beautiful wood. The one's that come on a loaded & I also have one are beautiful. Please don't put the rubber grip's with finger grove's on it. I think God..JMB would roll over in his grave if he seen these on his beloved 1911. Think about it...ROSEWOOD IS A BEAUTIFUL WOOD :) What can one say about rubber or plastic? :(

I love double diamond walnut or rosewood just as much as the next guy, but it can absorb sweat like a sponge and discolor.

These are inexpensive and very grippy, I've been a big fan of them on my 1911 though they may not necessarily be as pretty as exotic wood, they're practical, frugal, and functional:

Or flat dark earth.  Dillon has them all for $21.95 pair.  Very nice tacticool grips for the $.  And you get to support an AZ business.

I like Hogue Palm Swell panel grips. These have no finger groves and you can get them without the palm swell as well. I use these on my beater 1911 for lugging around the house or out in the woods when I'm in Wisconsin.

For my Colt I got some black Alumagrips because I wanted form and function. Nothing wrong with going cheap but don't get "literally cheap" grips because they might crack on you. Hogue is a reputable company as are a few others that sell inexpensive grips.

ETA: Those Kimber grips in the link above are nice to. I have a set for my RIA Officer model and they feel pretty nice. Since its my winter carry piece for when I use my PA permit they do just fine.

you have a $800+ gun and cant justify spending $50 (or even $40 or so used in teh EE) for some top quality, well made grips? i dont suppose you run a $10 holster too?

well, its your money; for ~$20, ergos are there for cheap...and they feel like shit to me, but i guess you get what you pay for; Hogues and pachymars are there too...

I personally hate anything that is "not-wood".

If you want inexpensive, I'd try the Falcon Ergo grips.  I like their AR-15 grips quite a bit but have never tried their 1911 grips.

Also, troll e-bay.  I've bought plenty of grips there in the past.

Lots of folks like the crossed cannon grips on your loaded. Throw them up on the EE and you'll be most of the way to a new set of nicer grips
