Want to checker the front strap on my loaded. I've done them, it sucks. Have a 20 line file. Think I want something different on this one.
I could checker it myself. Buy a 25 or 30 line file and spend hours over days or just send it out.

Should I go with Springfield customer service?  Someone else? Thinking 25 lines per inch machine cut with a refinish. Or should I sell this and buy a made here frame? This one is Brazil made

There's nothing wrong with the Brazilian made frames. So don't let the knuckle draggers shame you into thinking there is.

I'm also wanting the front strap checkered on my 1911, a Colt Combat Elite. But I'll be sending it out. Quite probably to the Springfield custom shop as it seems they sport a decent price and decent turnaround time.

I'm leaning towards 30 lpi. My edc Sic C3 came with what I believe is 25 lpi and while I really like it I think I want a different feel on the Colt.

How much does the file cost shipped to your door vs sending it to Springfield?  Are you planning on doing other frames or just this one?

My general rule of thumb is if it's for 1 gun it's cheaper to just send it off and have someone else do it because you'll never amortize the cost of the tool with just one.  If you've got 2 or 3 it might be worth buying the file then.  If you're going to send it out for refinishing rather than do it yourself you might as well just have them do it IMHO.

File less than $50. Checker front strap over  $200. I've done several frames. Don't want to put the work in.

Maybe look at Stan Chens machining services. I just sent him my second gun for his protrac checkering.

Send it to Springfield and have them undercut the fronts trap while they have it.

I sent mine to Springfield. Their performance shop is wonderful. They did about $1000.00 of stuff to my 1911A1 Stainless Loaded. This included a great job of machine checkering the front strap of the frame. I totally agree with the poster above. Mine has had to go back for service a few times. I found out it doesn't like CCI Blazer aluminum cases. I started shooting other stuff through it & it works great.

Thanks
Mark

Sounds like you should send it in then.  Even if you value your time at $20 a hour, which is pretty low, it's going to take you well over the $200 in labor alone.

I've done some over the years

mostly 20lpi, one 25lpi

It's a lot of work

the files are cheap at brownells

I made a jig from a piece of angle iron

afterward, i alway sent them off to http://www.mahovskysmetalife.com/Metalife%20Finish%20Page%202.htm

I haven't done one in years...

20lpi

25lpi

I'd send it out to SAC for 25lpi and a refinish.

This.

Do you send the whole pistol or just the stripped frame?

You can send the whole gun in so when you have them refinish the frame it matches all pretty like. If you don't care then you can send just the frame.
