I have an opportunity to buy a nice used M&P40 for a very good price, but I really like 9mm.  So, can an M&P40 be converted to 9mm without too much hassle?

AFAIK all you need is the 9mm barrel and just swap it out, 9mm mags would be nice as to I am not sure if they would feed from a 40 mag.

From what I've read, I think you actually need a conversion barrel:

In addition, you'd need 9mm mags. You should also change the extractor out to the 9mm extractor, but I've also read that the stock .40 extractor works pretty well.

ETA: if you're looking for a barrel for a full-size M&P, here's one for sale:

How about 40 S&W to 357 Sig for the compact M&P's? Midway has the 357 Sig barrels for the Compact, but I don't see a conv kit, if anything other than the barrel is needed. Not really up on the S&W Platforms, just bought my first one a week or so. I like the pistol though.

You only need a .357 Sig barrel to convert your .40 M&P, compact or whatever. They use the same magazine, even.

A M&P357 or M&P40 is able to shoot 40, 357, or 9mm if you have the right barrel. I have a M&P357 with a 40 barrel and a 9mm conversion barrel.

I actually ran the 9mm conversion barrel with the 40/357 magazines and didn't have any malfunctions until the last round. It would not feed.

The best place I have found online for barrels is http://www.gunbarrelsupply.com/
