Number came up today. Rack or Field for choices. I just paid the premium. If nothing else figured the designation would make it easier to sell if I'm not enamored with it. We shall see.

I chose field, and am not disappointed. My pistol ended up being a Remington Rand frame, with a post WWII colt barrel and slide rebuild marks indicating rebuild at USMC depot Albany GA in 1977. It shoots to point of aim at 50 feet, throws about a baseball size group at that distance. Much to my surprise it has fed and functioned everything I have thrown at it, from standard ball ( expected), federal hi shock hollow points, lead round nose and lead semi wadcutters both 160 and 200 grain. I especially was pleasantly surprised by the feeding of the SWC’s the 160’s in particular. And I loaded them Pretty light, at around 800 FPS From what I have seen of the current round, if I was called I would probably roll the dice on rack, as I have seen quite a few rack grades that look like they may be original finish or mostly original parts with a pretty good percentage of guns with slides and frames from the same manufacturer. |

Remington Rand Slide. Colt frame. Field grade mixmaster. Paperwork went in about a week before Thanksgiving and delivery was today. My paperwork was delayed as usual so couldn't take it with me but snapped a pic. Somebody wanted to make a two tone gun.

One could argue it's more correct as an example of a USGI 1911 pistol then the one you planned to put together with all manufacturer matching parts. I am eager to get mine home and check it out a little more. I keep looking at my pic and the pistol is certainly growing on me. With it home, I'm pretty stoked about this pistol. Initially when opening the cmp box at my FFL I was not completely enamored by the difference in slide/frame finishes, but the past couple days I've stared at the pic and grew to like it more and more. Took possession today and I'm actually pretty thrilled to have it. 1944 Colt frame and a Type 3 RR slide.
I don't know enough about barrels, but maybe someone can chime in. No other proofs other than the numbers. I'd definitely be there on a secondary order if CMP permitted. Wish I'd captured one before the prices moved upwards by $200, but I still think my example is a fair valuation. Pretty cool piece of history and dare I say art? Old milsurps are the best since they have so many stories to tell and you can just imagine where they've served. If only we could hear them! ![]() Going to have to find a way to get another for my second born now... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() EDIT: Internet is your friend. Quick few mins of searching and m1911.org had what I was looking for in a thread. Cage number gave its secrets... Per Exitwounds, an Old Timer: The barrel is a post 1968 standard USGI replacement barrel. It most likely is chrome lined. The M indicates the barrel was magnafluxed (magnetic tested), and the P is the normal Proof Mark found on USGI barrels. The 7791193 is the Ord. Dept. Part #. If it were an NM barrel it would be marked on the chamber hood .45 AUTO (over) NM 7991414 by mfr. 73677. The 73677 is a CAGE # for the manufacturer. The manufacture is Duroyd Mfg. Co. Inc. of NY. I have a few of those barrels still in the wrapper, they are 1979 -80 mfg. and there was about 55,000 or so made for the DOD under contract, and the ones I have are chrome lined. View Quote |

I’m 38831. Was set on service grade when I initially put in but honestly I might be more inclined towards a field or rack. Lots of nice looks racks coming through and I don’t mind a little character. From what I’ve seen there’s better chances for matching frame/slides and non-replacement slides in the rack and field grades vs service. We shall see what they offer when I get the call. Gonna be somewhat of an impulse decision.

Ended up with my friends Rack Grade. I picked it up at a very modest amount over the 1050.00 original cost. This works out well for me as I have a son and 2 grandsons.
With the combination of parts I could have 2 fairly well matched pistols, but I am leaving them in as received state. Bottom is round 1 Service grade, Colt/ Ithaca, middle is round 2 Rack RR/Colt and top is round 3 Rack Colt /RR. ![]() |

Based on what I'm seeing, I want a Rack or a Field grade. Looking for a collector, not a shooter. Seems Rack / Field have the "survivor" look to them, and the most character. Anxiously waiting for mine (and my wife's) numbers to be called.

Curious, how does the phone call go when they call you? I assume they advise of the grades available and ask what you want and confirm receiving FFL info? Do they take a card number right then? Can you call back to tell them what grade you want? Do I need to have my receiving FFL info on hand when they call?

Rattled like a cement truck full of gravel, and accuracy was nothing to write home about. I sourced a RR slide and High Standard barrel on EBay. They were actually pretty easy to find. Now it has just a slight rattle, and accuracy improved dramatically. Plus, it looks better now! ![]() |

Serial # 1378087 seems to make it a 1943 Remington Rand frame and an Ithaca slide. Still has the checkered small parts of the RR though. Has a post WWII replacement barrel. A bit of a mixmaster, but I'm still very pleased with it.
