I'm looking to get a 45.  I've shot several, but don't own one.  The latest 45 I shot, I rented at the local gunshop.  It was a Glock 30.  It was a very nice shooter and I like the fact that it held 10 rnds (I think 9 is the norm? but the magazine was extended to add a pinky rest).  Recoil was not unpleasant, unlike the Colt Commander I had shot earlier.

My normal carry gun is a Glock 26.  The 30 is very similar but alittle larger, still concealable though.

Does anyone have a Glock 30 and shoot it regularly?

Another gun I liked, was the ParaOrdanance Wart Hog I think it is called.   It holds 10 rnds and is quite small.  Anyone carry one of these regularly?

Both of these are running about the same price at the local store.

I like my Kimber Compact Aluminum.  It holds "only" 7+1, but with that and a spare 8 round mag I don't feel undergunned.  I like the slightly shorter grip and barrel for concealing under a polo shirt.  I CAN hide a fullsize 1911, but I PREFER to carry the smaller lighter version.

The slim profile of the single-stack 1911 makes it inherently concealable, especially so in a Sparks Versa Max II holster.

+1, in_burrito I had to check to make sure I hadn't written that!

Gotta go with the guys above, I really prefer the smaller 1911's.  That said I am a Glock fan and if I didn't have a small 1911 I would own a Glock 36 as it is slimmer than the 30.  While 7 or 8 rounds isn't as nice as 10 or 11, I don't mind being "short" a few rounds if the gun fits my hand better.

If you haven't tried the 36, rent one the next time you're at the range.

+1 for the 1911 .  The Glock 30 is also a great choice. The Para is not on the same level IMO.

For me it was a toss up between the Warthog and the Kimber and I chose the Kimber becuase the grip on the Para was way too fat for me and I didn't think it would be comfortable to conceal.  I had both the 3" CDP and Ultra Carry.  If you can, go with CDP, great gun.

Go with the Glock 30. It is one if the most accurate Glocks and it's a system you're familiar with. I am a huge 1911 fan but would choose a full-size 1911 over a compact. The G30 will be 100% reliable and gives you the option of carrying a G21 magazine as a spare.

I wouldn't trust my life to many guns. Thats why I carry a G30 or a revolver.

As I see it...

Glock pros:
- Reliable design
- 10 + capacity

Glock cons:
- Poor choice for concealability (prints easily)
- Lack of external safety + Light trigger pull = dangerous situation (IMO)
- Poor ergonomics

Warthog Pros:
- 10+ capacity
- decent ergonomics

Warthog Pros:
- Poor choice for concealability (prints easily)
- Unreliable by design (avoid all 1911 styles with a barrel less than 4")

Frankly, I feel BOTH are poor choices for CONCEALED carry. The number one factor for concealment is thickness and with their staggered .45 mags, both are chunky to say the least. In addition, one is unsafe and the other unreliable (IMO).

The solution then is the best quality tradtional style 1911 (with a barrel length of at least 4") that you can afford. The 1911 is among the most concealable of the big-bore pistols, it's design is extremely reliable OUT OF THE BOX (if you buy quality to begin with), and ergonomics are superb to name some of its merits. It's most notable liabilities are capacity (7-8+1), and cost. Sadly, entry level QUALITY begins at $700+ and it goes on up from there. I have invested over $2,000 into my CCW (not including magazines, leather, lead, or any other accessories). Some people might think that is crazy, but I find $2,000 + lead a cheap life insurance policy.

36 is great, it's slim and it disappears on you and with 6+1 it's not bad, if you want you can get a mag ext to get 7+1 but it's so much lighter than a micro 45 too. if that doesn't work you can pull the pin and throw it at 'em

I'm surprised nobody's said anything about a Khar.  Not that I know shit about them, myself, but eh.  Just throwing another name out there to further complicate the issue.

I handled one of the new .45 Kahrs recently.  I think that a large part of the reason nobody mentioned them is because very few people have them.

I liked the gun, but it really wasn't all that much smaller than my Compact (4" barrel) 1911.

The Kahr specs:
Barrel 3.54"
Length O/A 6.3"
Height 4.8"
Slide Width 1.01"
Weight Pistol 18.5 ounces

Kimber Pro Carry specs:
Barrel 4"
Length O/A 7.7"
Height 4.75"
Slide Width 1.28"
Weight Pistol 28 oz

Kimber Ultra Carry specs:
Barrel 3"
Length O/A 6.8"
Height 4.75"
Slide Width 1.28"
Weight Pistol 25 oz

I tried a 36. Hmm, a slim Glock just feels foreign to me.
Still a great idea from Glock. I just like the ones with the big bootys

Judging by what you said in your post (Macumazahn), I think you will be better off with a GLOCK... You say it was a nice shooter, you like the capacity and the recoil wasn't as bad as the type of 1911 you are also considering. I will toss my two cents in and say the G30.

One more reason I gave the G30 my vote is because you made no mention of the G36, which is an excellent choice as well. See if you can get your hands on one and put some lead down range - Then decide.

its a little slimmer than a 19 frame

Macumazahn if you're near Houston you can shoot my 36, and I can get a 30 for you to try also

Thanks Murdoc.  I like the feel of the 36, but i'm just uncomfortable with 6 rnds.  Maybe uncomfortable is the wrong word.  I just like having 10 rnds on tap if they are needed.  I also like being able to pop in a highcap Glock 21 mag if I need to.  I usually carry a G17 mag as an extra mag with my Glock 26.

The 36 is thinner and thus easier to conceal.  I might try to shoot one at the local range (I think they have one for rent), but I know for sure that the 30 is a good gun, just a bit larger than the 26.

As for Sigs, I hear good things about one, but have never had one or shot one, just held them at gunshows.  There are none to shoot locally, but I still don't think there is a SIG that takes 10 rnds in a small frame 45 comparable to the glock 30.

So far, only the Glock 30 fits my needs/wants, as i'm hearing that the Paraord Warthog is substandard?
