I'm going to be getting a new 1911 soon, Sig Scorpion 5". I had a Kimber Pro Carry HD II but sold it during some difficult times.

I'm wanting to pick up some mags for it but not sure which ones to get. I know the Wilson's are probably the best but lookin for cheaper options. I had these for my Kimber.

I went with the Wilsons because of the plastic follower and read that the metal ones could damage the ramp on the barrel. Is that just a problem with Kimbers or is that across the board?

any others i should definitly consider or just stick with the Wilsons? i know i'll only be saving a few bucks each with other brands but i dont want to spend 25 each on a mag thats not reliable when i could spend 30 on ones i know work.

Thanks.

Actually the Kimber Pro Carry HD would not have been a problem.  The problem is that some steel followers can damage alloy frame feedramps, and the HD has a steel frame.

I still like Wilsons though.

Have had no problems with Tripp Cobras.

Wilson 47's are also great.

Wilson's, Tripps and Chip McCormicks.

You can find Metalforms for a little less than the others.

I have a Springfield Loaded and just picked up Wilson Combat 47D's. I found that that don't load into the weapon properly.  One problem is when you load the mag, it strikes the mag release inside the mag well instead of just sliding past it.  The other problem is the top loaded round strikes the bolt face (if that's what you call it).  I can get the mag in with enough force, but the standard factory mags load smooth and trouble free.  Not sure what to do with this problem.

funny thing about springfield armory guns- some run with wilson mags, some dont.

that being said, ive never had a 1911 that wouldnt run with a good old chip mc cormick power mag.

My Colt will sometimes choke on Chip McCormick mags. No problems with 7rd Colt or Wilson Combat 47Ds.

Tripp mags look like winners, though. Magazine body made to be 8rd mags (WIlsons aren't), hybrid follower. If I didn't have a lot of mags, I'd probably load up on those. All of these brands are around $35 a mag.

My vote is Wilson. My Kimber, Springfield and Nighthawk wouldn't feed reliably from the McCormick mags, even with ball ammo.

What about the springfield mags?  I just bought a mil-spec and I want to use the loaded coupon to order some more 7-round mags.  Should I just spend that money elsewhere?

CMC Shooting Stars have proven flawless for me.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think i'll pick up one of each and see which ones work the best out of the Sig.

Would anyone happen to know what mags come with Sig 1911s from the factory?

If you go to 1911 Forum or M1911 Pistols forum there are numerous threads on this. M1911 has quite a following for the Checkmate magazines with the hybrid feedlips.

Many do not like the Wilson because the follower is all polymer and
will with time wear and not lock the slide back.  Tripp Cobra Mags
solved that problem with their hybrid follower; metal & plastic.

Tripp also makes the Flexfollower that is "no-tilt" and all metal.
Checkmate's follower is like this only coated in black Teflon and with
the dimple. (see above)

Some on those forums feel the springs prematurely weaken with the
Wilson mags. Tripp has some of the strongest mag springs around. Chrome
silicon and ever so slightly larger wire diameter. Wolff offers what is
referred to by those buying and using the Checkmate magazines a an 11#
spring. These can be specified when order Checkmate mags directly from
the factory.

Checkmate makes OEM mags for Colt.

I'm a huge fan of the Wilson ETM magazine.  They extended the tube just a bit to make it a true 8-round mag instead of a 7-round tube with 8 rounds stuffed in it.

Can't say what the best is I have all 8 round Tripp mags for my Champion Operator. Had a few Wilson but when I installed the S&A mainspring with magwell the Wilson made it hard to seat the mags without trying to change base plates around. The Tripps fit flush as they come so I continue to buy Tripp. Also they have functioned without problem in my Springfield.

I wont tell you they are the best but I will tell you I have never had a problem from CMC power mags.

Not the best and I am no expert. But I purchased a bunch of  Chip McCormicks  shooting stars mags years ago and never had one issue in a Loaded.

this topic is also covered in a bunch of Hilton Yam's writings.

if you intend to take a 1911 into harm's way, you should seriously read them.

there are few individuals that have done more research, or development on the 1911 platform for the purpose of using the 1911 to save your own life by killing the bad guy.

you can read them on his website www.10-8performance.com  under "articles."

im not trying to sound like a "10-8 fanboy" or anything, but a bunch of the lessons i had to learn the hard way through trial and error in the field are here for everyone's benefit.

Cdnn investments have the ACT mags for $18 a piece. The 3 I had worked well. Stay away from Kimber KimPro Tac mags. The springs go bad quickly and when I contacted Kimber, they told me they recommend replacing the mag springs every 500  rounds. @ $8 a piece, I said Eff that and traded the 8 of them off I had in a gun deal. The mags fed fine still, but would not lock the slide back. And that's an issue when you use them for IDPA
