I'm getting ready to graduate college and my dad wants to buy me a gun for a graduation present.  I already own Glocks, XD's, Sigs, Rugers..........(all plastic guns).  Anyway, I've wanted a 1911 for a while.  I shot my buddies Kimber and fell in love with the 1911 design.  For around 1000, give or take 100 dollars, what is the best 1911 out there.

Thanks in advance

STI Trojan from either Brazos Custom Gunworks
or Dawson Precision
and have them do a trigger job on the stock hammer and sear.

These set-ups are very popular amongst competition shooters who shoot thousands of rounds a year.
Accurate, robust, ergonomic, with a sweet trigger.  Has great features you won't find on common 1911s like an undercut trigger guard, a flat top, Novak cut sight dovetails so many aftermarket sights will work.
No evil firing pin safety.
MADE IN USA.

I've had/got Kimber, Springfield, Colt, a $2k custom Colt, a $1.5k custom Springfield,
and OK the Colt's the best, but for only $1k, the STI wins and works just about as well.

Get 20+  7 rd magazines. Keep them loaded and in a box/case/ammo can ready for the range. Then when you get a chance to get some range time, all that you have to do is grab the can and boogey. And when you get to the range, you spend your time shooting instead of constantly reloading the same 2 or 3 mags.

The P220 offers no advantage over a Springfield 1911 and the magazines are excessively expensive.

This or STI or why not a Colt Combat Elite. If I were in the market for a 1k or less thats where Id be shopping.

Dont own any of those either so Im not one of those guys that needs to get everyone shooting the same brands I do.

+1 on $$$$$ Sig 220 mags.....though their .22 cal conversion kits arent as expensive as most 1911's. And there are some good combo deals. That said I shoot NOTHING better than a good 1911. STI Spartans are quite a bargain.....

Big +1  Given the quality of components, and fit/finish it's pretty hard to beat a Dan Wesson at around $900-1000.
My only real problem is that all of the Dans that sell for under a grand are Stainless, and I don' like shiny.

At that price point my list contains two choices: an early model SIG 220 and a Colt 1911 series 70. If someone handed me $1000 today, I'd get the SIG, because the one I want is discontinued and finding a NIB or near NIB might be harder as time goes on. The Colts are still in production. If I could only have one of those and never ever the other, if it was the only .45 I could ever own, I'd go for the Colt.

I'm not saying the Colt is the best 1911 for the price. It's the one I'd chose, though.

Unless it's gotta be NIB, I'd look around for a used TRP.

I would suggest a Springfield Armory (SA) Loaded.  That should keep you within your budget range while also having a very nice 1911 platform.

Another option may be to go with a SA GI model for now for reasons others have mentioned previously.  The GI model is a great starter platform, and spending the difference left within your budget will cover the cost of extra magazines.  Personally, I relish in going to the range without the hassle of reloading mag's.

Cost of ammo right now is likely to damper most shooters who haven't already stocked-up.  If you have some like-minded .45 enthusiast friends, try to get with them on a case buy to reduce your cost.

Most of all, enjoy!!

One is a great pistol for 5-600 dollars.  One is a gigantic pile of shit.  You can guess which ones are which.

You really need to get both.

The STI Ranger II also fits in the <1000 category and more than likely you will have the only one at the range. I really like the way commander size pistols handle and this one is no exception.
Don't let the price of Sig mags sway your choice, I bought a number of Novak/ACT's and they ran about the same price as premium 1911 mags. Mec-Gar also makes 7 rounders for cheap also, which buy the way are the same mag Sig sells for twice as much.
