I want to buy a commander-style 1911 here in the next couple of weeks - this would include any pistols with a 3.5 to 4.25 barrel and regular frame - but I can't decide.

I've been looking at Colt 80 series Commander to Kimber Pro Carry to Les Baer Monolith Commanche to Springfield Champion to STI Duty CT to Ed Brown Kobra Commander.    I need opinions as to the best of these for the money?  I can spend up to $2K but I don't want to if I can get something just as good for half the price.

Thank you for your time.

John

I would also take a close look at the Dan Wessons and the S&Ws.  Otherwise I am aligned with your direction, and would probably select Colt given a choice.

I like the Colt. My friend and I both have new roll mark Commanders. They have been absolutely 100% reliable. If you shoot a lot the lack of a "beavertail" (I hate that term) grip safety could get annoying.

My second choice in the affordable category would be the Springfield Lightweight Champion.

In the semi-custom category you should also consider the Wilson Professional.

If you found a Les Baer in your price range then you need look no further.

Just remember that the more you spend (generally) the better the weapon you recieve is.

I would have Yost-Bonitz build me a gun if I was looking to spend that kind of scratch. Probably off a Colt, or a Caspian if I wanted to save some money.

The Dan Wesson Bobtail Commander is an outstanding value and a great shooter.  Yost-Bonitz will build you a piece that you will likely always be proud to own...

Knowing what I do now, having gone through a number of 1911's - I'd have Yo-Bo build another...just the way I want it...and I just might do that...

John you may want to consider DW, they have a bobtail chamber in a 10mm & 45ACP. I had Dave Severns perform the work, its a very nice weapon. Here are photos for the drool effect and a list of the work performed I have under 1500 for the complete setup, including the custom holster and belt.

Dan Wesson 10mm CBOB

Cylinder & Slide Inc, Tactical II hammer
STI S-7 Sear
Briley disconnector
Wilson blue hammer strut pin
EB hammer strut
EB SS grip saftey
EB tactical SS thumb safety
EB mag release
EB Slide stop
EGW o/s firing pin stop
Davidson Horned Lizard G-10 grips
Trigger job set@ 3.75
Reliability tune
Frame undercut

Andrew Custom crossdraw holster, weapon fits like a glove, no break in needed, hugs really tight and feels great. Quaility holster DO make a difference

Vrod,

BeeUteeful gun.  I may have to consider a Dan Wesson Bobtail.

Also, I had never heard of Yost-Bonitz and they are located about 20 miles from my house.  Lots to think about.

The BEST for the money IMO is the Ed Brown Kobra carry.

Used 70 S Colt commander w/ steel frame.  You have a Shi* load of money left over to play with.

I carry a Kimber Compact Aluminum every day and really like the weight savings and 1" of missing barrel for a daily carry piece.  I got mine used for $550.  Changed out the springs, the grips, and gave it a dose of Norrell's and it's all good.  They don't make them anymore, and even if they did you'd have to deal with that stupid schwartz safety, so used is the way to go.

Some will say that the aluminum is going to wear out faster than steel, and they're right.  But then again this isn't the gun I shoot every week either.  I shoot it once or twice a year to make sure it's till functioning and keep my regular weekly range visits confined to my fullsize steel frame gun.

Way to post a monster pic and jack up the whole thread.

If you don't know how to resize, at least post it as a link instead.

Nope, but you are.  At least I don't resort to pompous name-calling.  Silly me figured we were all adults here.

Edit:  What I am sorry for is this thread getting hijacked.  As such, I'm done posting here.  My opinion is get an Ed Brown.

i shot alot of commander sized guns before buying. Probably took 2.5 months to decide.

Springfield, Baer, Colt, Wilson, Kimber and so on over many range sessions..

I went with a Kobra Carry. If you have get a chance to shoot AND to carry a bobtailed 1911, it is something unique.

I'm simply in love with my S&W 1911PD. Doubt I'll ever own a steel framed commander - check one out, I'm glad I did!

FWIW, I NEVER planned to buy a S&W 1911 until I picked up the 1911PD - balance and pointability (for me anyways) are unsurpassed.

If money is not an object, the Ed Brown is the way to go. If you live on this planet, however, I recommend the Colt XSE Commander. Great shooter, good upgrade features, reliable as hell. You even have a choice of steel or lightweight frame.

Dan Wesson 1911's are definitely worth checking out.  I really like the one I owned.  Sold it to finance something else because I didn't carry it much.
