I've narrowed the choices of my next handgun down to the Beretta 96 Vertec or the Springfield XD-40. Which would you choose?

I would pick the Beretta just because I like the "look" better than than the XD. Both are should be great guns.

Why the .40? Might as well just step up to .45 and get a nice 1911.

I own an XD-40. Ain't no doubt about it. The Springfield. Sweeeeeeeeeeeeettttttttttttt!!!!!!
We ripped through 50 rounds; accurate and no problems. I asked the factory about it being made in Croatia, and the lady there said it is built to their specifications, and if I didn't want it she would buy it from me.

Hey, Avalon, not trying to start anything, but the guns looks don't put the bullet on target. XD-40 ain't much to look at but it sure puts the bullets where they need to go. My only Beretta experience is with the M-9 and yuck!!!

My vote goes to the XD as well.

For what its worth, rumor from SA is the the XD-45 is coming out right after the first of the year. I am waiting anxiously.

Wanted to add one more thing. There is nothing like removing the magazine, locking the slide back, flipping the disassembly lever up, releasing the slide lock, pulling the trigger and sliding the slide off of the grip assembly. Two pieces, that fast. Slide the spring forward, then up, and back. Do the barrel the same way. You're basically done for disassembly.

Even though I dont have an XD my vote goes to the Springfield. I have never been impressed by anything that Beretta USA has made.

I have one of the early HS2000 Generation 1 guns and bought it as soon as they hit the shelves. After man thousands of rounds I can say that it is a world class pistol and still underpriced at the higher Springfield prices. This one is a keeper and I rate it even higher than my SiGs.

Really?? I have a 92FS and it is a sweet 9mm handgun. Good balance, easy to shoot, and accurate! Maintenance is easy, and it eats any type of 9mm. It even likes aftermarket mags.

I would buy another Beretta if I was undecided between a Beretta and another gun.

As a side note: isn't the XD simply a re-branded Checz gun?

Avalon

The XD is Croation, the Croation Sensation as a matter of fact. The Beretta is a great pistol, and nobody would go wrong chosing one. But the HS2000/Springfield XD is another one and right now still very underpriced.

FYI:Beretta Hicaps can be modified to function in the Springfield XD
Not sure if this works for .40, but for those of you with 9mm

My buddy has an XD in OD Green, and original Gen. 1 HS2000 and a Beretta 92 that all use the same hi-caps. You take a dremel tool and make a small cut on the front face of the mag body. They will still work in a 92 then. Make sure that you size the new cut to fit in an XD though. When he bought the XD he found that the cut was too small to catch reliably like it did in his older HS2000. Looks like Springfield may have beefed up the mag catch a bit.

I would get the Vertec, but that is just for aesthetic reasons.  But they are both great guns so pick the one that fits and functions the way you like.

I was where you are in the decision process 3 wks ago, and I chose the Vertec.  I'm still looking at the XD, tho, and will probably get it, too, as a Xmas present to myself.

Bite the bullet, get both!!

Thanks for all the replies. I bought a XD-40 4" with Heinie night sights yesterday. I've only had time to put 50 rounds through it but so far I am very impressed. The feel and the trigger pull are outstanding.

BERETTA.

Reliable, accurate as all hell, and it EATS EVERYTHING you can find.  Always goes boom, and is one of the most accurate 9mm/40cal setups out there.

6k rounds through mine so far without ONE SINGLE problem.

My bud with an HS2000 cant say the same...

And the new vertec's are downright awesome handguns.

Dont let all that BS about slides flying off steer you away.  Thats what happens with most anything when you more than double the cartridge pressure...
