I posted another thread in general but a lot consider this SAA laser engraved rather than hand engraved.
how can you tell the difference?

My other thread in GD

In person yes.. from those photos, not as easy.

Even in person can sometimes be difficult, but far easier than from a photo.

You need much more magnification than in your photos in order to tell the difference. Hand engraving leaves smooth edges from the cutting tool, sometimes a "ratchet" looking edge if they used a powered hammer engraving setup. Laser engraved edges are rough from the laser bursts which actually form small, overlapping craters.

Got the camera and myself out and about somewhat.
got some close ups been a while since I ran the D7000 SO it is what it is. If you need better to distinguish laser from hand cut engraving let me know.

It looks hand engraved to me but I'll let the experts chime in. One thing I'd like to say is with hand engraving or anything you "chip" into the metal, there will be uneven points. Even good ones will be slightly harder to identify. I'm seeing some uneven and shallow points that make me believe it is hand engraved.

A great idea is to get an identical piece and see if they match in thickness and sharpness to each other. Also run your hands along it. From what I seen with laser engraving it feels fuzzy whereas when it is done by hand you again feel that uneven surface that some places will be sharper/finer while others would be shallow.

An old test to ID hand engraving was to drag a silk scarf or stocking over it.
If it's real hand engraving the sharp burrs left by the cutting graver will snag the silk.

My vote is hand engraved.

Hand engraved.  Look cafefully at the areas around the screws.  A modern laser would cut a perfect circle.  I'm seeing wavering caused be a manual tool.

I run laser and rotary engraving machines regularly.

Wow I appreciate the replies.
I'll have to try the silk trick never knew that.
now to try an find the engraver himself. I'll probably have to go to gun shows/events that might have some custom engravers displaying their wares and find similar
patterns and see if this is a custom style or a generally copied style of engraving.

thanks again all.

Best Regards,
TDK
