Heavier grain would be better for 4 legged animals, 158 or 180 grain. I would probably also use a jsp. I like 125 grain ammo for a self defense round (jhp). I have american eagle 158 grain ammo for when I am in the woods. 125 grain Rem GS for defense.

I like the Winchester 110gr Magnum JHP's. Box of 50 is around $12.
Very controlable & accurate out of my 4" 686.

For people just about any 125 grain JHP or SJHP (semi jacketed hollowpoint, they look like a softpoint that has a hollowpoint), or maybe the Win 110, when I'm being a pussy about the recoil, as the 110's are easy to shoot.
I'd use someting heavier and deeper for animals. The 158's, or maybe a 180. Depends on what I was worried about. Couger/mountain lion would still be a 125 grn HP, deer a 180 soft point. |

If WW has not watered them down within the last few years, the 145gr. Silvertip is an excellent compromise load. Good expansion, good penetration, "street proven" and recoil is very manageable. I think you would be very pleased with their performance over all.

Geez man, total no brainer. The 125 grain 357 semi jacketed hollow point has been the most effective fight stopper for one Hell of a long time. Use Remington or Federal, they are equally good. I run the Rems in my Ruger SP101 and they are accurate as Hell too!!! If I could pick only one round, this would be it!!

I vote the same. 125 Grain, semi jacketed HP does just about everything, although, it's not the best for big critters. My opinion is if you gotta face them, you need a larger caliber. For everything else, from rabbits, men, coyotes, deer, mountain lions and the like, 125 grainers ! |

Yep, that's the stuff. Apparently, Federal now calls it the" Hi-Shok" hollowpoint instead of "semi-jacketed". They have used that term for the 9mm stuff for 20+ years, I guess they figure it works for revolvers, too.

I really like the 125gr hornady XTP loaded right at the max load level for my Ruger Security Six.
Of course it ain't for everybody, flames shoot out the barrel and the sides, a thunderous boom and a pretty nasty kick. Not something I want to shoot all day but I am damn sure it will work fine if needed. |

Most 125gr .357 loads will have a bit more energy/velocity out of a 2" revolver than
9mm standard loads have out of a 4" auto. |

General carry 125jhp.
I have to go the other way if you are hunting,I like the deep sure penetration of a 158gr lead semi-wadcutter (kieth type) cast bullet. Hopefully you have a 6" or at least 4" to get full power. Check your sights at different ranges as going from a 125 to a 158 is going to shift your impact a bunch. |

Not quite the whole story... "Standard" 9mm 124gr. JHP loads from a 4in. barrel will usually run around 1100-1140fps, some less than that. From a 2"-2 1/2" barrel it is fairly common to see the 125gr. Federal run 1200-1250+ fps. Now 124 / 127gr. +P or +P+ 9mm in a 4+ in. barrel will, indeed begin to shade the 125gr, magnums, but even then, the revolver bullet with its exposed lead is a better expander than the 9mm round...IF rapid expansion is what you want. At contact ranges, the gas from the snubbie magnum will actually do much more damage than the bullet to internal organs in many cases. It is, of course, MUCH more difficult to shoot and the wheelgun holds less ammo, but don't ever sell the 125gr, .JHP 357 short! |

Speer makes a 158 Gold Dot, that is what I keep in my Python for "all-around" duty. Don't know how well the Gold Dot would penetrate versus a soft point or hard cast.

Speer gold dots are some of the best Gen 4 HP available. I also tend to carry the 158 grn GD when I'm carrying a .357. For hunting or dangerous critters like mountain lions I think a 180 grn Hornady XTP might be a better choice though.
