Im an Army sf guy in Iraq, when my company gets back were looking at getting 1911's in a group buy or something to modify, and shoot in competitions here at Bragg.
Were looking at around $500.00 budget, what do you guys think.
Looking for a good foundation to build on...
Thanks Mike

Sir, first of all thank you all for your service.  I would say go for a Sprinfield Armory Mil-Spec.  I think that it will be almost exactly what you are looking for.  Almost a bone stock 1911A1 type pistol, however, it will have decent sights, beveled mag well and a lowered and flared ejection port.

Since there are no sight cuts and the frame tangs are not radiused at all, it allows you build the pistol that YOU want individually.  Granted, for some types of grip safeties the tangs may need to be welded up prior to being fitted, however, it will still be worth it.

Since it will be a complete firearm, you will have the opportunity to go and and shoot the hell out of it and decide what you want to do to it.

500.00 is a pretty tight budget for a 1911. If that is a hard number your best bets appear to be the SA or the Taurus. I'd go with the former.

Thank you again for your service and efforts.  That was some pretty good advise stated above.  The Mil-Spec is the about the best you are going to buy for the budget while leaving a lot of room for improvement.  The only problem with the Mil-Spec is the ugly stamp under the dust cover that says "Made in Brazil."

I havn't seen a Taurus up close and in the hand yet so I can't comment on them.  Kimber's are ok, nothing to brag about, on occasion, something to complain about - but for the low cost 1911's you are going to run into minor problems.

Thanks again and good luck.

Thanks to all for the quick replies...
We were looking at Springfield Armorys 1911's mil spec/ and gi. model both well priced.
We've also been looking at Rock Island who sells 1911's really cheap at fairly good quality, i think there made in singapore.
The contest is for stock class 1911's, and we have a few guys who can do the work on the guns, just trying to get a good base...thanks for the advice thus far.
mike.

The SA milspec is a solid choice. I've put about 800 rnds through one and it was a great pistol.

DO NOT BUY Rock Island.

What's wrong with Rock Island 1911's?

Cheap metal, bad machining and pin holes that don't line up, or at least thats what the smiths tell me.

I'm not disputing this, but I looked at one the other day and was impressed by the quality (or the appearance of quality). Also I read a torture test where it was tested in extreme conditions against a Kimber, a Wilson CQB and some other high end model and it did just as well or better than all of them. I can't remember the site, but do a search on Rock Island Armory and it'll be one of the first 3 or 4 sites that come up.

I don't doubt that some RIA guns work. But you run a very good chance that the one you buy will be a turd.

First of all, ya shoulda joined the Marines.............

Secondly, the modern SA models come nicely fitted for slide & frame. Most of the documented failures usually come from subcomponents: mags, safeties, sights, etc. IOW, stuff they don't actually make.

However, if one mods the gun just a bit sometime down the road, for only a mere $150 or so, one can greatly upgrade the gun in areas such as sights & trigger.

I've got it narrowed to the SA Mil-Spec/Taurus. thus far.

Is that for a Mil-Spec or a WWII Mil-Spec?  Either way I would go for the Springer hands down, no questions asked.  Believe me you will not be disapointed, if there are any issues, Springfield will fix them no questions asked.

Don't forget, put at least 200 rounds of FACTORY ammunition through this pistol before you make any modifications.  This way if it does need any work the factory cannot blame it on the mods or reloaded ammunition when you initally contact them.  Shoot the hell out of it and then decide what you are wanting to do to it.

Good luck and thanks again for your service.

thanks, and our service here is with a smile :)
Its the Mil-Spec, not the Gi, Ive owned the Gi. Gave it to my father since, but thus far Im leaning towards the SA, taurus just doesnt have a big enough rep. in the 1911 market, although Ive heard many good things about them.

Good choice, stick with the SA.  It's proven, has great customer service and looks better IMHO.

$450.00 is one hell of a price for a Mil-Spec, very good find.

Well, as far as I am concerned there are only Colt 1911s and Notacolt 1911s but whithin your budget, I would go with SA.

Well the project is stalled, the man who was going to help me build a competition gun was killed in Combat in Iraq.

Sorry to see that post.

S/A is the way to go.

But I will say this, Last sunday I shot a Tuarus PT-1911. The one my friend got for X-mas. Good trigger and a smooth pistol. Its not my TRP. But for about $500 bucks, Its a great shooter for the money. Groups where about 3in. off hand in a cold rain at 25 feet. Not bad.

I'll throw in a vote for the STI Spartan.  Guns are selling for about $560 and they come with a great trigger and a tight fit from the factory.

Small, and in this case, sad world, mikwon.   Tung was a good friend of mine as well.  I came to know him while he was stationed here at Ft. Lewis when he was with 1st Group.  He used to hang out at my gunshow tables at the Washington Arms Collector monthly meeting in Puyallup.  He was also a very active shooter in 3 gun.  Damn... he could shoot!  I guess he proved that yet again in competition for 2006, and again while on the job.

What a tragic ending.

My buddy Bill has been asked by Tung's Wife Marci to help dispose of some of his stuff.  Bill called me last night to ask me about more tables at this months WAC show.  Hopefully, people will buy it all up.  She certainly doesn't need it and the money will be more useful to her in the long run.

If any of you guys need anything that we can help with over here, make sure you give us word.  JasonBurton was kind enough to send over a bunch of parts to the sandbox with one of your's and mine's friends just recently.  I'm sure he'd share if you need.  Not good for race guns, but good for fighting guns.

God's Speed.

Yea, the feeling in the company is somber at best when on the topic.
I remember before we left, he was on advanced party, sending back word....and already we were hearing stories that he was giving the badguys hell, one at a time.
Whenever the subject of shooting arose his name was mentioned, and his passion was guns, shooting, and applying it real world, and he was damn good at the application.

take care
