Do the ports really help control recoil and muzzle flip?  If it does,  is it because of the weight?  I'd like to hear from folks who have bought and installed the item on their guns.  I was thinking of getting one for range use and friendly competition with guys from work.

I had one a long time ago on a Norinco, other than looking kinda neat, it really did not do much in the way of reducing the recoil.
