When you get home at night wipe it down with a rig rag and don’t store it in the leather holster. I typically use a shoulder holster or carry owb which helps but that’s not always the case. Finally got the 10-8 stuff installed on my Loaded, so it should be about done now-at least unless/until I decide to finish de-MIMing it down the road. I *think* I'm much happier with the sights now, but I'll confirm that after I get to the range in the next few days.
![]() I also used up all of my fiber optic rod by going back and forth between green and red before finally deciding on green, so I will re-install the green fiber once the replacement fibers I ordered from Dawson come in, and I can get it just right after all the practice I had. ![]() Some of you may remember this now archived thread I started last Spring, trying to decide on a high-end 1911. The intent was to order it a few months ago, however my wife had some health issues that landed her in the hospital for over a month just after she turned 30, and we had to replace our home A/C system, dishwasher, and washer/dryer. Fuck this year btw. Nonetheless, that delayed but did not cancel my plans, and I ordered an Alchemy Prime two weeks ago. It's a full-size blued .45 with checkered wood grips, and the only options I added were removing the script logo from the ejection port side, and the gold bead front sight. It should be here Early January, and I have some desert ironwood grips on order for it from Wood Caliber. |

Last thing I can think of was a rolling pin. I wanted to try making hard tack. I remember using my moms wooden one as a kid the few times we baked something together, so I go to the store to buy my own and everyone was plastic crap and after the third or so store I just gave up and borrowed my moms. |

Heres a question for the 1911 carry guys. What grip screws should I get that dont rust? Do they make true brass screws? Or would stainless be the next best bet? The factory torqx screws are getting crap, had to use an oring pick to remove rust and actually get the torqx driver in the opening.

For a few weeks now I've been trying WD-40's rust inhibitor under the wood grips on my blued Alchemy. It's gone from needing to take the grips off every night and wipe them down (and still getting some surface rust) to being able to leave them for a week or more at a time even during EDC in the hot and humid August of the American South.
Very pleased with this product: WD-40 Specialist Corrosion Inhibitor, Long-Lasting Anti-Rust Spray |
|
|
This is what I've been using for years on my metal firearms to prevent rust. It works very well as a rust inhibitor but is not a great lubricant.
The way I apply it: I wipe all the surfaces of the firearm down well and let it sit for about a 1/2 hour. I then lightly wipe it again to remove any excess Eezox. I then let it sit overnight and the next day it has a dry layer of protection. When I first get a gun I will tear it down completely and do this process to all the parts. After that I just occasionally wipe the exterior parts that get a lot of sweat, wear, etc. In addition to this I use Lucas Extreme gun oil and grease on the appropriate areas. As I said Eezox is not the best lubricant. But works great at rust prevention. Eezox |

Most people, armorers included, wouldn't notice the starting signs of rust beginning, so I made sure my guys knew to keep an oil soaked rag and do a daily wipe-down. We also had a faster turn-in rate after field rotations compared to the line squads versus my Bradley crewman or my mortarmen when I was a mortar. Those line guys were always butt-hurt. I prefer John Harrison's small radius firing pin stop over the EGW because it already comes radiused and requires less fitting. I just measure the stop relative to the slide and use a "jig" like below to remove material from both sides. I can't seem to find John's instructions for fitting his stop.
