Mine get a wipe-down every evening. Mag body, controls and a quick hit with an oil soaked brush on all checkered/ serrated metal.

It's not the leather. It's just life. Wipe metal down after a sweaty day.

My stainless m66-8 has putting under the grips after 2 days in a kydex holster.

Parkerized guns actually do well in sweat and salt water.

As a midwesterner who carry’s blued guns regularly rig is your friend. When you get home at night wipe it down with a rig rag and don’t store it in the leather holster. I typically use a shoulder holster or carry owb which helps but that’s not always the case. Not a 1911 but here’s my M11 from the other day doing yard work. Attachment Attached File

I'm going to grab a rag when I head home. I concur about removing the gun / mags from leather at the end of the day.

Finally got the 10-8 stuff installed on my Loaded, so it should be about done now-at least unless/until I decide to finish de-MIMing it down the road. I *think* I'm much happier with the sights now, but I'll confirm that after I get to the range in the next few days.

I also used up all of my fiber optic rod by going back and forth between green and red before finally deciding on green, so I will re-install the green fiber once the replacement fibers I ordered from Dawson come in, and I can get it just right after all the practice I had.

Some of you may remember this now archived thread I started last Spring, trying to decide on a high-end 1911. The intent was to order it a few months ago, however my wife had some health issues that landed her in the hospital for over a month just after she turned 30, and we had to replace our home A/C system, dishwasher, and washer/dryer. Fuck this year btw.

Nonetheless, that delayed but did not cancel my plans, and I ordered an Alchemy Prime two weeks ago. It's a full-size blued .45 with checkered wood grips, and the only options I added were removing the script logo from the ejection port side, and the gold bead front sight. It should be here Early January, and I have some desert ironwood grips on order for it from Wood Caliber.

I will look into it when I go to the store. I am getting the sense that it will be like most times when I go to the store to get an older fashioned type item where they wont have it or it will be a junk variation.

Last thing I can think of was a rolling pin. I wanted to try making hard tack. I remember using my moms wooden one as a kid the few times we baked something together, so I go to the store to buy my own and everyone was plastic crap and after the third or so store I just gave up and borrowed my moms.

Heres a question for the 1911 carry guys. What grip screws should I get that dont rust? Do they make true brass screws? Or would stainless be the next best bet? The factory torqx screws are getting crap, had to use an oring pick to remove rust and actually get the torqx driver in the opening.

I use blued ones.

Just wipe them down when you wipe the gun down then periodically take the grips off to check underneath for corrosion.

Stainless, because they 'stain-less'.  I've still had a touchof rust form in the torx hole on the screw.
Regular weekly maintenance is your friend.

For a few weeks now I've been trying WD-40's rust inhibitor under the wood grips on my blued Alchemy.  It's gone from needing to take the grips off every night and wipe them down (and still getting some surface rust) to being able to leave them for a week or more at a time even during EDC in the hot and humid August of the American South.

Very pleased with this product:   WD-40 Specialist Corrosion Inhibitor, Long-Lasting Anti-Rust Spray

This is what I've been using for years on my metal firearms to prevent rust. It works very well as a rust inhibitor but is not a great lubricant.
The way I apply it: I wipe all the surfaces of the firearm down well and let it sit for about a 1/2 hour. I then lightly wipe it again to remove any excess Eezox. I then let it sit overnight and the next day it has a dry layer of protection. When I first get a gun I will tear it down completely and do this process to all the parts. After that I just occasionally wipe the exterior parts that get a lot of sweat, wear, etc. In addition to this I use Lucas Extreme gun oil and grease on the appropriate areas. As I said Eezox is not the best lubricant. But works great at rust prevention.

Eezox

I’ve had really good luck with the VZ “designer” grip screws, but when I switched to slim profile grips, I just used the short blues ones from Brownell’s. I haven’t seen any rust on them so far.

I use military CLP with the white gunk in the bottom (I guess I’ll die) and it is the best rust preventative I’ve ever used. I’ve shot this pistol in mud, rain and river water, and nary a speck of rust have I seen.

My process is simple: detail strip, clean the weapon, leave in the hot summer sun for at least an hour, soaked in CLP. Wipe down with a rag, reassemble and rock on wit ya bad self.

I had to do wipe-downs daily to prevent rust everywhere. Most people, armorers included, wouldn't notice the starting signs of rust beginning, so I made sure my guys knew to keep an oil soaked rag and do a daily wipe-down.

We also had a faster turn-in rate after field rotations compared to the line squads versus my Bradley crewman or my mortarmen when I was a mortar. Those line guys were always butt-hurt.

Priorities of Work also works outside of the military or Patrol Base Operations.

Not entirely sure where he was at. It was a comment dropped on me at some point years ago, possibly when i owned and carried a SW Shield that I neglected till the mag release froze.

Heres a question for the 1911 experts here. Stock recoil spring on the SA TRP is supposed to be 16# , but I read that you possibly want an 18# for +P loads. What say you?

Perhaps I am a big fat pussy, but the fukin Federal HST 230 grains rock my socks.

Try the flat based firing pin stop from EGW. I was recommended them on here and they help with recoil for sure.

Doing a little light reading on them while going to pick up a desk with bros, would that require fitting or is it generally drop in. Thanks

I prefer John Harrison's small radius firing pin stop over the EGW because it already comes radiused and requires less fitting. I just measure the stop relative to the slide and use a "jig" like below to remove material from both sides. I can't seem to find John's instructions for fitting his stop.

I have had good results in several pistols with the EGW small radius firing pin stops.  The general consensus, (matched by my gut feeling), is that they are about equivalent to a 2# stronger spring.

Both of mine required fitting but it's easy to do. I just took an equal amount off both sides with a file while test fitting every so often.

No, do you think Charlie could do it? Starting at the other side would be a bit much. The sign in the sisters doesn't give a good distance. It just says to the split in the trail.

Another #45friday in the bag. Hope everyone is doing well! My Colt Rail Gun is fast becoming my “forever gun,” despite many attempts to supplant it with Glocks, Berettas, FNs and other assorted pieces.

This excellent handgun just fits me to a T, and every time I carry something else, I miss it.

I’ve given through to sending it off for custom work, but to be honest, it shoots better than I can hold, works like it should, and the honest wear it’s showing looks damn good on a 1911 (or any other gun, for that matter.)

So, I think I’ll just keep on keeping on with the old girl and enjoy the many benefits of carrying a fun, stylish and reliable incarnation of America’s pistol.
