I'm buying a Super Redhawk in either 454 or 480. I have read the recoil of the 454 is greater than that of the 480, but I'm wondering which is the better round for big game hunting. Is the 454 with it's higher recoil a better terminal hunting round? I plan to hunt Whitetail, Elk, Wild Boar and maybe a Bear or two with it. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Not sure about what is better but with the 454 you can also shoot .45 colt wich I like..

I bought a .480 with the intention of big game.  The .454 is no  baby, but it is not as big in diameter.  I feel the .480 is the better of a short range handgun for big game.  Kinda like a .45-70 vs. a .30-06 if you will.  The .454 is probably more versitle, but I wanted something with some weight behind it when up close.

I've owned both.  The .454 does have more recoil although I don't think the difference is that noticeable.  I would suggest getting the .454.  As someone already mentioned, you can shoot .45 LC out of it, but I also think it is easier to find factory .454 loads than it is to find .480.

The .454 is going to be a lot more versital.  Ammo (both .454 and .45 Colt) will be easier to find as well.
My preference over either would be .445 as it retains downrange energy better, but that's not what you asked, and isn;t offered by Ruger.
