1911s are from an age when all parts were made from milled forgings and barstock and hand assembled. 1911s are very exspensive to produce in this manner today and those that are produced in this manner are the Wilson, Les Baers, Ed Browns etc...... mostly $2000 pistols.
Todays production 1911s mostly have a variety of cast and MiM parts which while not necassarely bad do vary quite a bit in quality of manufacture and fit. This is done so as to be able to market these pistols in the $500 to $1200 dollar range that most of us can afford.
MOST of these pistols are fine and servicable out of the box while some are not. Those that fuction fine are seldom posted about, those that don't get a lot of press
The 1911 is used by ELITE US MILITARY and LE agencies for a reason. It is the DESIGN that most of the IPSC crowd uses for a reason.
It is a very easy platform to learn to use well with a Century of COMBAT proven worthness.
Many of the current pistol designs take advantage of polyomers and stamped steel as these are the manufacturing meathods of today. This allows these Manufactures to produce these designs far less exspensively while making them quite reliable. However EVERY manufacture has its weak points and turns out lemons.
If you read enough FORUMS you'll find every one hates one design/manufacturer and loves another. They find a need to belittle the competition and expound the virtue of what they carry. Human nature I guess.
If you want a 1911 you'll never be happy with anything else, If you don't trust the 1911 you're better off not packing one. The decision will be hard but it's all yours to make.
I've carried 1911's by choise for a couple of decades. I carry other handguns due to Employer requirements.
Read the Forums, do your homework and make a rational decision. Then buy the best you can afford even if you can't afford it. Then Learn how to become proficient with it after all you could be betting your life on it.
Good luck.
