I know the military has done their test..but that was before most of us were born..
Yes I did have a 1911...A Colt Combat Elite but hard times made me choose.....
Now I want a 1911 that works out of the box ""looking at a  SIG""without sending it to a 1911 guru for tweeks..
Yes I am a glock guy and proud of it...Glock 21 since 1991...But a 1911 never hurts.

I haven't heard of a torture test that extreme on a 1911, and it would probably fail regardless of manufacturer.
If you want one that runs out of the box buy a Kimber.

Well, the tests didn't involve being tossed from a plane (who drops their gun from a plane anyway?), but in the Guns & Ammo annual 'The Complete Book of the Model 1911', Patrick Sweeney had an article called 'Abusing 1911s For Fun'. He had a few pistols (Kimber Warrior, Wilson CQB, Rock Island, and someothers), and buried them, stuk them down in the mud, ran them over, and even fired them underwater.

So there is some documentation.

KABOOM to you bud!. Seriously, if a 95 year old design STILL is one of the most prolific and well known pistols in the world, it got that way because it worked.

You cannot in any way, take 50 different manufacturers of a weapon and make an assumption that the ORIGINAL design was somehow flawed.

Take a Glock, let everyone from Jerry Lewis to Einstein build and manufacture it and you would get results all over the table.

USGI guns were built to the same standards with materials, and specs that were pretty much the same. That is why they worked.

You can buy a 1911 built by anyone, from anywhere today, to whatever standards they want to follow, from any material or metal. Small wonder that people have problems with them.

And Glock does have its share of troubles. It's nice to have a good friend who teaches armorer classes for Glock. He will be the first to tell you that it's a great pistol, but it needs parts changing and repairs just like any other. A dirty FP channel in a glock will shut it down in a hurry. I will say tho, it is very easy to drop in a new part and be on your way tho. Can't always do that with the 1911 design.

Half the troubles with 1911s anymore are out of spec designs [supposedly more accurate] and improper metals and manufacturer methods. It ain't cheap to make one right.

If I remember correctly the FBI did some of the most comprehensive pistol testing done in the past ten years or so.

And bought Springfield Armory Professionals.

Glocks are great, but they occasionally break just like everything else

I rode a harley for ten years and logged over 120,000 miles on it and I will tell you that it will never be as reliable or trouble free a Japper or a Beemer..Thats why Harley finally made a liquid cooled motor"V-rod" and then had the Gremans unfuck it.....Thats why  I own a Beemer
There are better designs our there...
The Browning Hi-Power because even John knew the 1911 had issues that needed to be fixed and caliber was not one of them .....
HK's...Glocks....Sig's...Different and new and NO issues like a 1911 design...
Even the Hi-Power I own does not have near the issues of a 1911....
As for the 1911's history....I know it and respect it
I carried one in Panama and Desert Sheild/Storm and THERE  never was an issue to its reliablity as long as Ball ammo  and mil-spec mags...
So it appears that no one has to this day abused a sigle 1911 like the glock abuse has done....
Well it looks like I'll get a Kimber or SIG GSR 1911

This question is asked alot. You need some thicker skin.

It is the same reasons why the m16 and varants, AK47s are used widely through out the world in military operations..

I never asked and it appears it is a dead horse issue like AK's and 16's...wolf ammo or not...

The military did further testing in the 1980s when they were selecting a replacement for the M1911A1.  They used the M1911A1 as a control since they knew what it would take.  It was more reliable than the revolvers, even after being buried in mud and frozen at Ft. Richardson.

The revolvers stuck tight.  The 1911A1 became a manually operated single-shot - it still fired but needed the slide to be cycled by hand.  I don't recall how it fared against other semi-autos.  It didn't matter much, either way, since the military was determined to go to a 9mm to have commonality with the rest of NATO.

I have a bunch of 1911A1s that work for me.  I haven't yet sent one to a high dollar smith - although I know the rudiments of firearms maintenance, so I feel pretty confident working on stuff.  Either way, whenever I pull the trigger, they go bang, and that's all I ask for.  I don't generally run over my firearms, so I'm just not all that concerned with how they react to that.
